For some tourists, travelling is all about excitement of the unknown. Such travellers search out 
brand-new experiences each year. Research has confirmed that being in unfamiliar 
surroundings stimulates production of the hormone adrenaline, which creates the ’buzz’ we 
associate with excitement and happiness. Travellers who fall into this category aren't looking 
for luxury, but rather are drawn towards anything novel or even challenging and are not put off 
by physical discomfort or even danger. Trips that provide physical challenge include trekking 
expeditions or overland trips to see remote and often spectacular parts of the planet. For many people relaxation as the main motivation for their annual break. Those who struggle 
to manage their stress at work need to take a step back from the pressures of deadlines and 
difficult work relationships. Such travellers opt for the familiar resort package offering a 
comfortable room, swimming pool, beach and sun loungers where you can while away the 
hours until your next meal. However, the necessity to stray far from home , if all you really 
crave is a quiet corner, is questionable. This is why the “staycation”, or holiday at home, have 
become so popular. Besides, since holidays are a luxury that many cannot afford some people 
opt to stay at home. Others do so for ethical reasons, as they cannot justify the carbon footprint
from travelling for pleasure. The benefit of incorporating ’holiday time' Into your home life is 
that you can create a holiday feeling whenever you wish. Some travellers are drawn by their natural curiosity to expand their own experience of life by 
gaining insights into how others live theirs. There may also be a nagging suspicion that there is 
a comer of the world or a way of living where they might find greater fulfilment. The house 
swap can be a good option as it enables you to 'wear' someone else's identity for a short time. 
Another way to achieve this immersion in an unfamiliar culture is through a working holiday. 
This can be immensely rewarding and self-enriching. For some people a holiday can be a time when normal life is suspended in order to provide 
space to reflect and make choices about future directions. You can shun friends and family 
members in order to enjoy a period of solitude, and many are searching for this kind of self-
discovery experience. Retreats are growing in popularity as holiday destinations, where 
individuals can escape the bustle of modem life and have time to reflect. Some even impose 
compulsory silence. There are also ‘digital detox’ holidays. Travellers who opt for the ‘de-tech’ 
package take the plunge and separate themselves from their gadgets.  As for me I do not entirely fall into any category. My type of traveller is rather a combination of 
both a holidaymaker and a culture explorer with a tinge of adventure seeker. This is the reason 
why I do not usually opt for package tours and prefer working out my personal itinerary. An 
ideal vacation, for example, could be a 2-week trip across one of the regions in Italy, which can 
provide several benefits at a time. For example, you can travel along the coastline, enjoying 
beach relaxation and exploring some wild and unknown areas, with mountains and small towns.
If you are fond of archeology, architecture, or simply want to see history come to life, your 
cultural thirst will be fully satiated. It also offers a physical challenge as it involves loads of 
walking, cycling, mountain hiking or skiing in winter season.  Whatever your vacation preferences, it is definitely worth spending some time thinking about 
what you are really searching for.
