Emma

Emma The Origins Emma is a given female name. It is derived from the Germanic word ermen meaning whole or universal, and was originally a short form of Germanic names that began with ermen. It was introduced to England by Emma of Normandy, who was the wife of king Ethelred II. It was also borne by an 11th-century Austrian saint, who is sometimes called Hemma. After the Norman conquest this name became common in England. It was revived in the 18th century, perhaps in part due to Matthew Prior's poem 'Henry and Emma'. It was also used by Jane Austen for the central character, the matchmaker Emma Woodhouse, in her novel 'Emma'. The Saxons & Vikings

There were few bad roads, so it took several weeks to send a messenger & ask for help and help was a long time in coming. In 866 York fell to the Vikings. York had Viking kings until 954. In 865 the Vikings invaded Britain. Northumbria, Mercia & East Anglia fell into their hands. Only Wessex was left to face the enemy. Wessex became the centre of resistance. The Danes had made an attempt to conquer Wessex, but king Egbert had defeated them. In 871 the Danes invaded Wessex again. Its king Ethelred I died, his brother Alfred, became king. Alfred could think of only one solution bribery. He paid the Danes money to leave Wessex alone. They did but only for 4 years. In 876 the Danes attacked again. Alfred won several victories and defeated the Danes in AD 878. The treaty of Wedmore in 878 divided England. The Danes promised to leave Wessex & part of Mercia. They settled in the north-western part in a region which from that time was called the Danelaw

Prehistory, Saxon invasion and Celtic Kingdoms

London was raided in 842. In 865 they started to settle in Britain. They quickly accepted Christianity and didn't disturb the local population. King Alfred was strong enough to win an important battle against the Vikings and they made a treaty which gave the Viking north and east of England. Rest of the country Alfred was recognised as king. Who should be king? When Danish Vikings started raiding westwards, the Saxon King Ethelred started gathering taxes to pay the Vikings so that they wouldn't raid anymore. When he died, Cnut (the leader of Danish Vikings) became king and after his death his son took over, but the also died soon so the Witan quickly gave the throne to Edward one of Saxon Ethelred's son. After his death the next king was Harold from Wessex. He had no claims for the throne so the Duke William of Normandy claimed it to himself. Harold died in the battle of Hastings and the throne went to Wiliam.

The Vikings and Scandinavians settled down and intermixed with the Irish. By the mid-ninth century they had also settled in parts of mainland Scotland, for example Shetland and the Isle of Man. The Viking settlers were integrating with the local Gaelic population. Wales was not colonised by the Vikings as heavily as eastern England. The Vikings did, however, settle in the south around St. David's among other places. *Ethelred the Unready and Danegeld Of all the kings in English history, Ethelred II has perhaps the worst reputation. By the end of his reign, he'd managed to lose almost all of England to Viking Invaders. Ethelred was faced with a very large Viking fleet. This fleet was led by Olaf a Norwegian with ambitions to reclaim the Danelaw to his country. After military setbacks Ethelred was able to come to terms with Olaf, who returned to Norway. While this arrangement won him some respect, England faced further raids from Viking. Ethelred fought
