Kadi Bruus Courage in the Storm I was covering my ears while waiting for the next thunder to strike. The distance from my  house to the shelter seemed insurmountable. I swallowed the lump in my throat and run. The  storm was so intense, it made hurricane Irma look like a sneeze. It must have been the loudest thunderstorm I have ever heard and the rain – like someone was pouring water from a giant  bucket. I barely made it to the shelter, that my dad built a few years ago. It was a safe place to hide  while hurricanes and thunderstorms were bullying. The room was equipped with all the  necessary things – food, water, batteries, flashlights, warm clothes, etc. But to my surprise, I  was the first one there. Where were mum and dad? Where was my younger sister? I tried to  remember where I saw them last. I couldn’t think straight, I was overwhelmed with worry.  I heard someone banging on the hatch. I opened it with lightning speed and I saw my sister  standing there.  “Why are you standing there? Come in, quickly!” I demanded.  “Where were you? Where are mum and dad?” I asked  anxiously. “I was in the toilet and suddenly I felt the house shaking. I called for mummy but nobody was there. I got scared so I crabbed my Teddy and run here, like I am taught to do.” “You did good, you were very brave!” I praised her and gave her a comforting hug. I had to find out where my parents were. I taught my sister how to open and close the  shelters’ hatch and ordered her to stay there and wait for my return.  Again, I swallowed the fear and run. I was headed back to the house, when I heard our dog  Bingo howling in his kennel. Instantly I was on my way to save him. I took him into my arms and hurried back to the shelter. My sister was so happy to see me and Bingo, but her face  changed. “You are going away again, aren’t you?” she burst into tears. “I have to find them. Don’t worry, I’ll be back. Besides, now you have Bingo with you,” I  tried to comfort her.  I winked at her while she was closing the hatch behind me. I made it back to the house and I screamed for my parents. I was panicking and losing hope  when I suddenly heard a clattering noise from upstairs. I bounded up the stairs and searched  for them. “We are here! Help us!” I heard them shouting in the attic.


Kadi Bruus I felt tears in my eyes when I opened the attic hatch. Never have I ever been so happy to see  my parents. We hugged and hurried back to the shelter. The lashing rain washed the tears from my eyes.  Now safely in the shelter, dry and warm clothes on, I can relax and listen to the nature telling  us how magnificent and fierce it can be.
