home. A great part of K. Rauds work is based on Estonian folklore. his drawings have been the first to give visible shape to strange and ancient creatures, ghosts, goblins and personificated natural forces and even to tales of flying lakes etc. The magic world of Kristjan Rauds drawings charms the viewer with its epic poetry. In 1935 many Estonian homws acquired a copy of their national epic Kalevipoeg illustrated by Kristjan Raud. This made his name known to his fellow countrymen. Kalevipoeg with Rauds pictures was reissued in 1975. To an average Estonian Kristjan Raud is primarily known as the illustrator of the national epic and as an advocate of national romantic art ideas in the 1930s when quite different winds were already blowing even in the remote European province of Estonia. Characteristic of Estonian folklore Kristjan Rauds work contains very few light and playful undertones. The image

Tolerance and Diversity

However, people who are being brought up in countries with wide diversity, are much more tolerant than people who are not. They meet different origins and skin colours while they grow up. They are used to the diversity of the society -- their friends and relatives maybe of another origin. Diversity joins the cultures of people of different origin. Different cultures make the country multifarious and unite the human beings. They can introduce their customs and culture to their fellow countrymen and in the course of time the cultures blend and become one. Yet, this new type of culture has influences on both original cultures. So everybody wins from "diversity'' and receives a new cultural experience. Different people have dissimilar religion. They believe according to their beliefs. Usually people follow their religion and do not tolerate other beliefs. Such behavior may cause conflicts between the people with different religions, but tolerance is the keyword to avoid conflicts

E.g. the Monk doesn't pray, he hunts. He is fat, doesn't fast a lot, rides a good horse and is richly dressed. He is still presented in good nature. The Parson is poor but is rich of holy thought and work. The Student rides an extremely lean horse, is poor, dresses threadbare his clothes are shabby because he spends all his money on books. He represents the spirit of learning. The Shipman represents many of his countrymen, other sailors, including pirates, who were making a name for England as a powerful maritime nation. o They each tell a story suitable for their class, different genres. The Knight a romance, the Miller a fabliau, the Prioress a religious legend. Each story has its own prologue and epilogue. There are numerous interruptions, characterised by the pilgrims' own actions. The whole tales are a broad

The Origins of American Literature

The House of Usher (1839) and The Masque of the Red Death (1842) show a deeply analytical mind which Poe also applied to literary criticism. His novel The Murders in the Rue Morgue is widely considered to have given rise to the genre of detective stories. The characteristic mixture and haunting imagery can also be found in his poetry, of which The Raven (1845) and Annabel Lee (1849) are good examples (Also The Bells). Somewhat overlooked by his contemporary fellow countrymen, Poe's work was particularly influential in France, where it was (discovered and) translated by Charles Baudelaire. The mid-19th cent was a period of astonishing literary creativity in Am lit. In the short space of 6 years, four monumental lit works were published: Nathaniel Hawthorne's (1804-64) The Scarlet Letter (1850), Herman Melville's (1819-91) Moby Dick (1851), Henry David Thoreau's (1817-62) Walden (1854) and Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass (1855)

fortresses, shipwrights, and seamen--including Cornelis Cruys, a vice-admiral who became, under Franz Lefort, the Tsar's advisor in maritime affairs. Peter later put his knowledge of shipbuilding to use in helping build Russia's navy. Peter paid a visit to Frederik Ruysch, who taught him how to draw teeth and catch butterflies. Ludolf Bakhuysen, a painter of seascapes. Jan van der Heyden, the inventor of the fire hose, received Peter, who was keen to learn and pass on his knowledge to his countrymen. On 16 January 1698 Peter organized a farewell party and invited Johan Huydecoper van Maarsseveen, who had to sit between Lefort and the Tsar and drink. In England Peter met with King William III, visited Greenwich and Oxford, posed for Sir Godfrey Kneller, and saw a Royal Navy Fleet Review at Deptford. He travelled to the city of Manchester to learn the techniques of city-building he would later use to great effect at Saint Petersburg. The Embassy next went to Leipzig, Dresden, and Vienna

And if my advice had been heeded on this point, we should still have at least some sort of constitutional government, if not the best in the world, whereas, as it is, we have none at all. Not only must we show consideration for those whom we have conquered by force of arms but we must also ensure protection to those who lay down their arms and throw themselves upon the mercy of our generals, even though the battering-ram has hammered at their walls. And among our countrymen justice has been observed so conscientiously in this direction, that those who have given promise of protection to states or nations subdued in war become, after the custom of our forefathers, the patrons of those states. As for war, humane laws touching it are drawn up in the fetial code of the Roman People under all the guarantees of religion; and from this it may be gathered that no war is just, unless it is entered

Did squeak and gibber in the Roman streets: As stars with trains of fire and dews of blood, 10 Disasters in the sun; and the moist star Upon whose influence Neptune's empire stands Was sick almost to doomsday with eclipse: And even the like precurse of fierce events, As harbingers preceding still the fates And prologue to the omen coming on, Have heaven and earth together demonstrated Unto our climatures and countrymen.— But soft, behold! lo, where it comes again! Re-enter Ghost I'll cross it, though it blast me. Stay, illusion! If thou hast any sound, or use of voice, Speak to me: If there be any good thing to be done, That may to thee do ease and grace to me, Speak to me: Cock crows If thou art privy to thy country's fate, Which, happily, foreknowing may avoid, O, speak! Or if thou hast uphoarded in thy life Extorted treasure in the womb of earth, For which, they say, you spirits oft walk in death,

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

By its material and realisation, the work is clear and creates an organic unity. Themes are closely akin in spirit to folk music though there are almost no direct quotations: the music stands on an extended tonal basis. Jürisalu never uses the sharp devices typical of some other composers of his 1 The work was first performed by ERSO, 19 Oct. 1970, Eri Klas conducting. generation (Rääts, Pärt), he simply has no need. His “actors” are ordinary countrymen, free from stress and anxiety. Jürisalu’s counterpoint is linear and appears quite strongly in the Finale. The symphony was commented by Avo Hirvesoo: I guess that through this work, several problems under discussion find their explanation. Firstly, it is obviously quite complicated to compose in a simple manner; this symphony is really surprisingly simple in its nature. Secondly, there is no sense in trying to join up the work of modern foreign schools and follow other brilliant persons

Moreover, the effects were diffused over many messages, commingled with other sources of information, distorted by Nazi preconceptions, so that it was virtually impossible to single out cryptanalyzed information as critical in a specific event. Finally, and most important, Germany lost the war, reducing all the Pers z efforts in the final analysis to nullity.
