play much of a role in linguistic theory, in part because the lexicon is (or is often thought of as) the repository of everything that is arbitrary and unsystematic about language. Looked at one way, this exclusion makes sense: whether a language has a word for `horse' or not tells us nothing about the language's grammar or phonology. However, the fact that the lexicon reflects the physical and cultural environment in which a language is spoken does have an important corollary, namely that when the environment changes, the lexicon has to change. The history of many languages is greatly marked by the fact that their environments have changed dramatically over the past couple of millennia. Great technological changes have led to great cultural changes, including greater contact between different peoples, which in turn have led to more cultural and technological changes. Therefore it's not surprising that there

Silicon Valley

When a large tract has been developed by a single organization, you can always tell. Most towns with personality are old, but they don't have to be. Old towns have two advantages: they're denser, because they were laid out before cars, and they're more varied, because they were built one building at a time. You could have both now. Just have building codes that ensure density, and ban large scale developments. A corollary is that you have to keep out the biggest developer of all: the government. A government that asks "How can we build a silicon valley?" has probably ensured failure by the way they framed the question. You don't build a silicon valley; you let one grow. Nerds If you want to attract nerds, you need more than a town with personality. You need a town with the right personality. Nerds are a distinct subset of the creative class, with different

Riskistrateegia.  Täpsustamine vs laiendamine on ise konstrukt, personaalne tähendus. STRATEEGIA VALIKU NELI TEGURIT:  Konstrukti muutmise vajadus.  Sündmuse kontekst. Täpsustamine – kui ennustus ebarahuldav. Laiendamine – kui ennustus rahuldav.  Emotsionaalne seisund. Täpsustamine – ärevus. Laiendamine – väsimus.  Personaalne stiil. Täpsustamine – alalhoidlik. Laiendamine – riskeeriv. III KONSTRUKTI POOLUSED (DICHOTOMY COROLLARY):  „A person´s construct system is composed of a finite number of dichotomous constructs.“  Konstrukt näitab, mille poolest on sündmus sarnane ja mille poolest erinev teistest sündmustest.  Sündmuse konstrueerimiseks on vaja tajuda: - praegust situatsiooni. - sündmust, mis on temaga sarnane (minevikus) - sündmust, mis on temast ja praegusest erinev. transistor. Some fans can be speed-modulated by using PWM techniques, but be sure your fan will operate this way. Some fans use electronic controllers that don’t like PWM inputs. In many systems you need to monitor the fan to be sure it is operating, since fans tend to have a high failure rate relative to other parts of the elec- tronics. In fact, you can make a case for the concept that if you don’t need to monitor the fan, then you don’t need a fan. Or, the corollary is that if you need a fan to keep things from overheating, then you must monitor it to be sure it is working. There are several ways to monitor fan operation. One is simply to put a semiconductor temperature sensor somewhere in the electronics and see if things overheat. Another way is to use an airflow sensor near the fan to sense if air is really moving. Some fans include an internal sensor that generates a pulse at least once per revolution. Figure 6

not only make plaintexts harder to solve, but may themselves function as a rough form of cryptography. Two gossips, for example, may refer to a third party by her initials. They hope that no one within hearing will have sufficient knowledge of the contextual situation to restore the eliminated portion of the name. Much of the Masonic ritual is printed in that form: "Do u declr, upn ur honr, tt u r promptd to. . . ." Another corollary is that more text is needed to solve a low- redundancy cryptogram than one with a high-redundancy plaintext. Shannon has managed to quantify the amount of material needed to achieve a unique and unambiguous solution when the plaintext has a known degree of redundancy. He calls the number of letters the "unicity distance" (or "unicity point"), and he calculates it by means of a rather complicated formula. This formula naturally differs for different ciphers,
