In the past, rampant publicity over the personal affairs of England managers has done little to endear them to the sport's mandarins. So a disciplined, conservative Italian who attempts to shun the limelight, avoids late nights and socialises outside football circles would appear to be their man. Yesterday, Fabio Capello sat down for talks with FA bosses that are expected to result in him being awarded a multi-million pound contract before Christmas. A perfect match? Well, possibly. There's just one thing. The conservatism that makes the61-year-old so appealing to some has for others, on occasion, gone just a little bit too far. Capello you see has a habit of spouting forth with opinions on public life. And those figures he admires most play their politics wide on the right.

Newcomers quickly learn the lingo, concepts, and assumptions that have been passed down by generations of storytellers and filmmakers. T h i s provides everyone with a shorthand for the rapid communication of story ideas. M e a n w h i l e new terms and concepts are always being created to reflect chang ing conditions. Junior studio executives listen carefully for signs of insight, philoso phy, or ordering principle from their bosses. People take their lead from the leader. Any terms of art, any aphorisms or rules of thumb are seized upon and passed down, becoming part of the corporate culture of that studio and the general knowl edge of the industry. It's especially true when those bits of received wisdom lead to successful, popular entertainments. T h e Hero's Journey language is clearly becoming part of the storytelling common knowledge and its principles have been used consciously to create hugely
manufacture it when it isn't there at all? As it turns out, cooperation passes the test with flying colors.
