Oliver Twist

I read a book called „Oliver Twist“ which is written by Charles Dickens. It was first published in 1837. The scenery of the book takes place in the 18th century England. The main character of the story is Oliver. The story starts with Oliver’s mother giving birth to Oliver and she herself dies after giving birth. No one knew who was Oliver’s father, so he grew up in a workhouse. In 8 years, he was moved to a different workhouse, because he was too old to keep living in the same one he lived in before. In the workhouse children have to work all day while they are starving. One day after finishing their food, some boys including Oliver decide to cast lots and whoever loses has to go and ask for more food. Oliver loses and he goes to ask, but gets denied and punished for asking for more food. Next day, an advertisement was put up claiming that whoever takes Oliver from the workhouse will also get 5 pounds for taking him

Charles Dickens (1812 to 1870) is generally considered to be the greatest English novelist. He wrote novels that exposed terrible lives of the poor during the nineteenth century in England. His novels draw attention to the dreadful conditions in which so many of London's poor lived at that time. Those novels reflect Dickens' own childhood. Oliver Twist tells the story of an orphan, who after spending his early life in a workhouse is sent to work for a hard taskmaster. Oliver runs away to London, where he joins a gang and become a pickpocket. By chance a gentelman takes pity on Oliver and takes him into his house. Although Oliver is forced to return for a time to gang , he eventually is reunited with his family and lives happily ever after.

in building workhouses to accommodate and give jobs to people who couldn't support themselves financially. Also in the workhouses were orphaned (children without parents) and abandoned children, the physically and mentally sick, the disabled, the elderly and unmarried mothers. The idea of workhouses was kind of good, but in reality, there were several problems with them. The government, terrified of encouraging 'idlers' (lazy people), made sure that people feared the workhouse and would do anything to keep out of it. The problems included poor education system for children(teachers uninspired and low paid, children weren't taught reading and writing), physically demanding jobs(breaking rocks and so on; very detrimental to health) and long, 10-hour workdays; women, children and men had different living and working areas in the workhouse, so families were split up. To make things even worse they could be punished if they even tried to speak to one another

Charlie Chaplin Charlie Chaplin was born in London on 16th April, 1889. Both his parents were music hall entertainers and Charlie started appearing on the stage while still a child. His father, Charles Chaplin, deserted the family and eventually died of alcoholism. His mother, Hannah Chaplin, found it increasingly difficult to find work on the stage and in 1895 the family entered the Lambeth Workhouse. When he was sixteen Chaplin won the part of Billy in a West End production of Sherlock Holmes. He later joined Fred Karno's music hall revue. While touring the United States in 1913 Chaplin was discovered by the film producer Mack Sennett. Over the next couple of years Chaplin made a series of short slapstick films for Sennett's Keystone Company. In these films Chaplin developed a character that wore baggy pants, tight frock coat, large shoes on the wrong feet and a black derby hat

kodanikud, kuulub erilisse klassi 11. Kaasaegse vanglakaristuse teke ja areng kuni XX sajandi alguseni (Bentham, Howard). Uut tüüpi vanglad Ameerikas (Philadelphia, Auburn). Esimene vangla tänapäevasemas mõttes, vangla kui kinnine asutus, kus kurjategijaid üritati mõjutada sotsiaalsete vahenditega, asutati 1550. aastal Inglismaal Bridewelle's. Bridewell'i vanglat nimetati töömajaks (workhouse), kuhu paigutati hulkurid, vargad, prostituudid. Bridewell oli eeskujuks järgmistele sama tüüpi asutustele, näiteks: 1595.a., Amsterdam vangla, kuhu paigutati kohtu poolt süüdi mõistetud mehed, hulkurid.
