7 million km² and it is about 3700 km from the most northern point to its most southern point and about 4000 km from east to west. There are also many different seas around Australia, like the Coral and the Tasman Seas in the west or the Timor and the Arafura Seas in the north, where the Indian and the Pacific Oceans meet. Because all seas and oceans near Australia are warm, surfing is a very popular hobby. Political subdivision Australia is divided into six states, which are: · New South Wales · Victoria · Queensland · South Australia · Western Australia · Tasmania New South Wales is the most populous state in Australia. Its capital is Sydney. Victoria is one of the most densely populated states in Australia. Its capital city is Melbourne and it was named after the British Prime Minister Lord Melbourne. Australia

There are more than 800 kinds of birds in Australia. The emu is a flightless bird. It is up to two metres tall and can run very fast. The first people to inhabit Australia were the ancestors of the Aborigines, who arrived over 40,000 years ago. The first Europeans to sight the Australian continent were the Dutch in 1606. They called what they had found New Holland, but made no attempt at settlement. In 1770, James Cook sailed there, mapping the east coast of Australia, which he named New South Wales and claimed for Britain. Britain started sending its convicts to the place now called Sydney, and they established the colony of New South Wales. This day is celebrated as Australia's national day, Australia day. Most of the people there are of British origin, with a culture and outlook similar to the UK and USA. In 1901, five colonies became states linked by one federal government the Commonwealth of Australia.

Ireland report

[27] A study conducted by Trinity College Dublin, and part-funded by the National Millennium Committee, concluded that the Irish are primarily descended from people who migrated north from Iberia after the Ice-Age ended some 12,000 years ago. The geneticists who conducted this research, produced a map of Europe with contours linking places that corresponded in terms of genetic ancestry. One contour goes around the edge of the Atlantic, around Wales, Scotland, Ireland and includes Galicia and the Basque Country.[28] Over the last 1,000 years, there have been influences by the Vikings, who founded several ports, including Dublin, and Normans, with some admixture to the gene pool. However, the greater part (80%) of the Irish population descends from the original inhabitants of the island who came after the end of the Ice Age. Many in the north of Ireland can claim descent from settlers from Britain mostly Scotland; the Ulster-Scots.
