Regardless of their age or whether they live in a city or the countryside, an important weekend ritual for many Estonians is the Saturday sauna. Christmas time is the most important holiday celebrated in Estonia. Like in other Nordic states, Estonia's celebration of Christmas mostly falls on Christmas Eve, the 24th of December. Christmas as an official holiday was banned during the Soviet occupation. Despite the restrictions, Christmas was still celebrated unofficially, with family and close friends. Aside from Christmas, Midsummer Eve (June 23) and St. John's Day (June 24) are the most important days in the Estonian calendar. They were celebrated long before the arrival of Christianity in Estonia, although named by the crusaders. The most common tradition associated with those holidays is the lighting of the bonfire and jumping over it. It was seen as a way of guaranteeing prosperity and avoiding bad luck.
