The mysterious affair at styles

The Mysterious Affair at Styles, published in 1920, is Agatha Christie's first novel. In it Agatha introduces her world-famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot. The story begins when Captain Hastings, recovering(taastama) from wounds he suffered during the World War I, runs into an old friend, John Cavendish. Hastings is invited down to Styles, where Cavendish lives, to recuperate. At Styles, the center of attention is Emily Inglethorp, John Cavendish's stepmother. Emily inherited Styles from John's father when he died and runs the household with a firm hand. Hastings describes her as "an energetic, autocratic personality" with a fondness for "playing the Lady Bountiful." She is devoted to charitable causes and is always getting involved(haaratud) in bazaars and other functions. Emily hasn't changed since Hastings last saw her, and there is no question of who is running the show at Styles. Emily Inglethorp's presence and conversation dominate

John Dashwood is grown and married, and has a four-year-old son, Harry. When Old Mr. Dashwood dies, he leaves his estate to John and little Harry, who had much endeared himself to the old man. But now John's father, Henry Dashwood, is left with no way of supporting his wife and three daughters, and he too dies one year later, leaving only ten thousand pounds for his family. Just before his death, he makes his son John promise to care for his stepmother and three half-sisters. Mr. John Dashwood initially intends to keep his promise and treat his female relatives generously, but his wife Fanny, a narrow-minded and selfish woman, convinces him to leave them only five hundred pounds apiece. Fanny moves into Norland immediately following Mr. Henry Dashwood's death and becomes mistress of the estate, relegating John's stepmother Mrs. Dashwood and half-sisters Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret to the status of mere visitors.

Freedom of speech

express their own opinion on many subjects. Anyway if I live in Republic I should have to be a chance to express my opinion. There is still a place, where I can not do this. That place is unfortunately my home, what does not makes the homely feeling in me. When I was just a little girl, my mother died and everything in my life changed. My father separated me from my sister and brother. I had to go to live in his family and accept with a stepmother and their kids. To me was verboten to say my opinion about something. I knew only that, everyday there was a paper on my desk and there were jobs, what I had to do along this day. Sometimes they were too hard to me and I had to study late at night. In my opinion every person should feel them well and free at home. But with me it did not happened. What I am trying to say with that long story is, that if there is a freedom of speech, it is still limited with laws or from other humans

Christopher Vogler The Writers Journey

You can't tell stories without them. T h e archetypes that occur most frequendy in stories, and that seem to be the most useful for the writer to understand, are: HERO M E N T O R (Wise Old Man or Woman) THRESHOLD GUARDIAN HERALD SHAPESHIFTER SHADOW ALLY TRICKSTER There are, of course, many more archetypes; as many as there are human qual ities to dramatize in stories. Fairy tales are crowded with archetypal figures: the Wolf, the Hunter, the Good Mother, the W i c k e d Stepmother, the Fairy Godmother, the W i t c h , the Prince or Princess, the Greedy Innkeeper, and so forth, who perform highly specialized functions. Jung and others have identified many psychological archetypes, such as the Puer Aeternus or eternal boy, who can be found in myths as the ever-youthful Cupid, in stories as characters such as Peter Pan, and in life as men who never want to grow up. Particular genres of modern stories have their specialized character types,
