--Ed Bluestone What gets measured gets managed. --Peter Drucker, recipient of Presidential Medal of Freedom 199.2 ... Trevor stared at the LCD as it delivered the news. He blinked a few times. 199.2. Then he blinked a few more times. "Holy crap!" He'd put on about 10 pounds a year after sophomore year in high school, tipping the scales at 240 pounds at college graduation. Now, for the rst time since his teens, Trevor weighed less than 200 pounds. That had been the goal since stepping on a treadmill almost two years earlier, but a distant goal. Breaking the 200 barrier had seemed unattainable. Now he'd done it. The question wasn't so much how he did it. The real question was: why did it work? Simple. He'd made an agreement with a coworker: they would go to the gym together three

"He said it was a 'safe' place to talk to you. I swear the old man is losing his mind." I joined in his laughter weakly. "Anyway, he said that if I told you something, he would get me that master cylinder I need," he confessed with a sheepish grin. "Tell me, then. I want you to get your car finished." I grinned back. At least Jacob didn't believe any of this. It made the situation a bit easier. Against the wall, Edward was watching my face, his own face expressionless. I saw a sophomore in a pink dress eyeing him with timid speculation, but he didn't seem to be aware of her. Jacob looked away again, ashamed. "Don't get mad, okay?" "There's no way I'll be mad at you, Jacob," I assured him. "I won't even be mad at Billy. Just say what you have to." "Well -- this is so stupid, I'm sorry, Bella -- he wants you to break up with your boyfriend. He asked me to tell you 'please.'" He shook his head in disgust. "He's still superstitious, eh?" "Yeah. He was..

The more electric shock a woman received as part of the initiation ceremony, the more she later persuaded herself that her new group and its activities were inter- esting, intelligent, and desirable. N ow the harassments, the exertions, even the beatings of initiation rituals begin to make sense. The Thonga tribesman with tears in his eyes, watching his 10- year-old son tremble through a night on the cold ground of the "yard of myster- ies," the college sophomore punctuating his Hell Night paddling of his fraternity "little brother" with bursts of nervous laughter, these are not acts of sadism. They are acts of group survival. They function, oddly enough, to spur future society members to find the group more attractive and worthwhile. As long as it is the case that people like and believe in what they have struggled to get, these groups will continue to arrange effortful and troublesome initiation rites. The loyalty and ded-
