has power • Life on the Missisippi (1883)- based on his own experience • The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) – based on his own childhood • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885) – begins as a sequel to 'Tom Sawyer' - Huck vernacular hero - there doesn't seem to much plot or structure, open story, open spirit - tension between laws of society and insticts - contrast between riverbank and river. Riverbank = fixed, social roles and concealed meanings, River = place of harmony, no clock time, wonder - possibility of human development - not a perfect book, but raises many significant questions about American life at a time etc. • Twain was becoming pessimistic, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1889) • The Mysterious Stranger (1916) WILLIAM DEAN HOWELLS (1837-1920) • Commonplace • Problems of the machine age and city

Taj Mahal

The finial is topped by a moon, a typical Islamic motif, whose horns point heavenward. Because of its placement on the main spire, the horns of moon and finial point combine to create a trident shape, reminiscent of traditional Hindu symbols of Shiva. Construction The Taj Mahal was built on a parcel of land to the south of the walled city of Agra. An area of roughly three acres was excavated, filled with dirt to reduce seepage and leveled at 50 meters above riverbank. In the tomb area, wells were dug and filled with stone and rubble as the footings of the tomb. Instead of lashed bamboo, workmen constructed a colossal brick scaffold that mirrored the tomb. The scaffold was so enormous that foremen estimated it would take years to dismantle. According to the legend, Shah Jahan decreed that anyone could keep the bricks taken from the scaffold, and thus it was dismantled by peasants overnight. A

got a job waiting on tables. After commencement in February of 1914, he attended graduate school, managing to fall in love twice, once with a brunette, once with the blonde daughter of a movie-house owner. While he was there, a wealthy textile merchant, George Fabyan, who maintained laboratories in acoustics, chemistry, genetics, and cryp- tology (to try to prove that Bacon wrote Shakespeare's plays) on his 500- acre estate, Riverbank, at Geneva, Illinois, decided that he needed a geneticist to improve the grains and livestock on his farm. He applied to Cornell for a "would-be-er," not an "as-is-er," and hired Friedman, to begin June 1, 1915. Fabyan was a man of no formal education but of intelligence and energy. He had a great desire to be "somebody," and that desire motivated his subsidizing the Baconian studies: proof of this revolutionary thesis would cover its patron as well as its actual discoverers with glory
