Political parties in the US

formed by people in the states of the North and West, such as Abraham Lincoln, who wanted the government to prevent the expansion of slavery into new states then being admitted to the union. Most Americans today consider the Democratic party the more liberal party. Democrats believe the federal government and the state governments should be active in providing social and economic programs for those who need them, such as the poor, the unemployed or students who need money to go to college. Republicans are not necessarily opposed to such programs. They believe, however, that many social programs are too costly to the taxpayers and that when taxes are raised to pay for such programs, everyone is hurt. They often accuse the Democrats of making the government too expensive and of creating too many laws that harm individual initiative. For that reason, Americans tend to think of the Republican party as more conservative.

the west. But soon the white moved further west into the lands where the Indians lived and there were again many battles. The American Civil War (18611865) was a civil war between the United States of America (the "Union") and the Southern slave states of the newly formed Confederate States of America under Jefferson Davis. The Union included all of the free states and the five slaveholding border states and was led by Abraham Lincoln and the Republican Party. Republicans opposed the expansion of slavery into territories owned by the United States, and their victory in the presidential election of 1860 resulted in seven Southern states declaring their secession from the Union even before Lincoln took office. The Union rejected secession, regarding it as rebellion. The war began in 1861 with the bombing at Fort Sumter in South Carolina. After 4 years of war, the South finally surrendered and the Confederate States of America was destroyed.

rule. Fifty years later, Oliver Cromwell put down Irish rebellions with extreme ferocity. In 1690 the Irish made another attempt to resist the conquest of their country, but they were defeated. The Irish continued to resist. By the end of the 19th century, most people in Britain favoured Home Rule for Ireland, but the Protestant Unionists in the north were sufficiently strong to prevent it. In 1916 a group of Irish Republicans staged Easter Rising in Dublin. The uprising was put down, but the brutal methods used by the British troops strengthened Irish resistance and let to the formation of the Irish Republican Army (IRA) who fought against British occupation. This resulted, in 1921, in independence being conceded to the 26 counties of southern Ireland, which became the Republic of Eire in 1949. Ulster was allowed to remain within the United Kingdom.

Education

I say this because I've met such students. Also, some private schools kids have turned out to be unsuccessful. Probably a loving, involved family atmosphere, in which such things as reading, game- playing, shared meals and other activities all go on routinely -- is more valuable than monetary wealth with a sterile family life. Sure, children can always grow up to beat the odds. But I'd rather cast my vote for public schools and the Republicans' "strong family values" over a private school upbringing that had joyless family life. Yes, the best is to have your cake and eat it, too. But although wealth just won't go around, love, sharing, reading, good manners -- are within the reach of all of us. Can't win 'em all, or predict. Some kids rebel no matter what. If we try our best to raise virtuous, well behaved, thoughtful offspring, and they nonetheless become sociopaths, vulgar

The 4-Hour Body - An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman - Timothy Ferriss

Science starts with educated (read: wild-ass) guesses. Then it's all trial and error. Sometimes you predict correctly from the outset. More often, you make mistakes and stumble across unexpected ndings, which lead to new questions. If you want to sit on the sidelines and play full-time skeptic, suspending action until a scienti c consensus is reached, that's your choice. Just realize that science is, alas, often as political as a dinner party with die- hard Democrats and Republicans. Consensus comes late at best. Don't use skepticism as a thinly veiled excuse for inaction or remaining in your comfort zone. Be skeptical, but for the right reason: because you're looking for the most promising option to test in real life. Be proactively skeptical, not defensively skeptical. Let me know if you make a cool discovery or prove me wrong. This book will evolve through your feedback and help. RULE #5. ENJOY IT.
