Estonia is divided into 15 counties which are divided in turn into 207 rural municipalities and 47 towns. The Republic of Estonia, the northernmost and smallest of the three Baltic countries, is located on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea in the north-east of Europe. Lying between East and West, it has served as junction of international trade routes for centuries. Moreover, Estonian neighbours are Russia and Latvia. Tallinn

Tallinn`s first fortress was built in Toompea, in 1050. As an important port for trade between Russia and Scandinavia, it became a target for the expansion of the Teutonic Knights and the Kingdom of Denmark during the period of Northern Crusades in the beginning of the 13th century when Christianity was forcibly imposed on the local population. Danish rule of Tallinn and Northern Estonia started in 1219. In 1285 the city became the northernmost member of the Hanseatic League - a military alliance of German-dominated cities inNorthern Europe. The Danes sold Tallinn along with their other land possessions in northern Estonia to the Teutonic Knights in 1346. Medieval Tallinn enjoyed a strategic position at the crossroads of trade between Western and Northern Europe and Russia. The city, with a population of 8,000, was very well fortified with city walls and 66 defence towers.

New Zealand beaches

The beach is popular with local surfers, as well as wedding parties. 10. Ninety Mile Beach, Northland-While the name Ninety Mile Beach is actually a misnomer (it's really only 55 miles long, and New Zealanders use kilometers rather than miles), it is justly a top tourist destination for its staggering beauty. With sand dunes reminiscent of a desert landscape, it stretches from just west of Kaitaia right to Cape Reinga, the northernmost tip of New Zealand. Golden sands and impressive breakers alongside the magical Aupouri Forest make this perhaps the most famous beach in New Zealand -- it's certainly the biggest. The long stretch of beach is best accessed from Ahipara township at the southernmost point of the beach. Follow Sandhill Road north with various access points dotted along the way.

In AD 985 Vikings sailing from Iceland to Greenland were blown westward off their course and the Vikings sighted the coast of Labrador peninsula. The report of forested areas encouraged further exploration because the colonies in Greenland which belonged to the Vikings lacked lumber. In AD 1000 Leif Ericson became the first European to land in North America. The first colony was established what was described as Vinland by the Vikings. It was located on the northernmost tip of todays Newfoundland. There has also been a theory that the Vikings penetrated Hudson Bay and reached the Great Lakes region but recent investigations have cast serious doubt on it. The Greenland colony died out during the 15th century and the Viking adventures in Canada must have come to an end long before that time. The Colony of New France By 1600 French interest in Canada was renewed because of the beaver pelt trade and the fishing industry

areas producing fruit, vegetables, and dairy products. The North includes the Yukon Territory and the Northwest territories, along with all of Canada's Arctic islands. Much of the North is treeless tundra. In the summer months, there is no darkness; the sun never sets. In winter it is so cold that the earth is frozen for most of the year and never thaws more than half a metre from the surface. Only simple plants called lichens grow on the northernmost islands. The North is home to indigenous peoples, and to a great variety of wildlife including caribou and polar bears. Canada has an extremely large number of lakes, the largest of them are Great Slave Lake and Great Bear Lake. The two principal river systems are the Mackenzie and the St Lawrence. Canada's climate helps explain why there are so few people in so big a land. Northern Canada has short, cool summers and long cold winters

spread from there throughout the northern edge of North America and back into Siberia. This is possible but not established. Many scientists believe the Inuit migrated to North America across the Bering Strait from Arctic Siberia. Until recently, outsiders called the Inuit "Eskimo", but as it is seen as a derogatory term, they now prefer their own term, "Inuit," meaning simply "people." 7. When did the Inuit get their own territory? What is it called? Nunavut is the largest, northernmost and newest territory of Canada. From 1991, it has been the territory of the Inuit, Nunavut meaning "our land". It was separated officially from the Northwest Territories on April 1, 1999, via the Nunavut Act and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement Act. Nunavut comprises a major portion of Northern Canada, and most of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. It is the only geo-political region of Canada that is not connected to the rest of North America by highway. Nunavut is
