Perseverance, poise and conservatism1 have shown, usually later than sooner, that all is not gold that glitters from afar, and chasing “fresh-isms” may prove to be a naïve and infantile stimulation. “Concrete” music, instrumental (absurdist) theatre, “happenings” – such affairs do not, in my opinion, illustrate an exceptional talent, but rather feebleness. One of the great absurdities seems to be the fusion of many antagonistic styles, methodologies and languages in one composition: all becomes equally hazy and flat. Remembering the beginning of the 1960s, when the “new wave” of Modernism had arrived on my doorstep, I have to note some points that are still relevant today. My rst book, after being turned down by 26 out of 27 publishers, had just hit the New York Times bestseller list and seemed headed for #1 on the business list, where it landed several months later. No one was more dumbfounded than me. One particularly beautiful morning in San Jose, I had my rst major media phone interview with Clive Thompson of Wired magazine. During our pre-interview small chat, I apologized if I sounded buzzed. I was. I had just nished a 10-minute workout following a double espresso on an empty stomach. It was a new experiment that would take me to single-digit bodyfat with two such sessions per week. Clive wanted to talk to me about e-mail and websites like Twitter.
