Sports. Sports has a very old history. The ancient Olympic Games were the first big sports competitions. The history of the Olympic Games is linked with many myths referred to in ancient sources, but in the historic years their founder is said to be Oxylos whose descendant Ifitos later rejuvenated the Games. According to the tradition, the Olympic Games began in 776 B.C. when Ifitos made a treaty with Lycourgos the king and famous legislator of Sparta and Cleisthenes the king of Pissa. In this treaty that was the decisive event for the development of the sanctuary as a Panhellenic centre, the "sacred truce" was agreed. That is to say ceasing of fighting in all of the Freek world for as long as the Olympic Games were on. The Olympic Games were held, after the completion of four years during the month of July or August. The time between two competitions was called the Olympiad. In the beginning the games last

The boys of my school are crazy about football, they play football and the girls are football fans. The girls never miss a single match played by school teams. And now a few words about our physical training lessons. In winter our physical training lessons are held out-of-doors. We go skiing or skating. When it is cold outside P.T. lessons are held indoors, in our school gymnasium. We play different team-games such as basket-ball or volley-ball. Besides we have some training in gymnastics. In autumn and in spring, when the weather is warm we have P.T. lessons at our school stadium. My school has a sports day once a year in late spring. On this day we have no lessons. All the competitors change into their sports clothes, the spectators find their seats round the track ready to cheer. All the events take place at the same time. This day is a great success every year. Even if the weather is not warm, we enjoy ourselves just the same. Vocabulary: 1

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

Throughout this period the main channel of expression, national spirit, and the guardian of national identity was the indigenous Estonian folk art: runic poetry, songs, tales, tunes, dances, richly decorated handicraft, and folk customs. The ancient Estonian runic song stood quite apart from the European tradition: the core consisting of one-two phrases in small diapason (up to 5-6 tones), recitative performance, slow movements, a governing epic-lyrical mood with mostly stable rhythmic patterns, as a rule usually sung by women in one voice. In the second half of the 19th century Estonian folk song and folk poetry were displaying novel features. The end rhyme became dominant and previous archaic melodies were substituted by more lively tunes sometimes reproducing features from German and Swedish music. After the Great Northern War in 1721 Estonia became part of the Russian Empire; though Estonians had lived as the serfs of the Baltic-German nobility since the

Carl Lewis

Carl Lewis The greatest and most famous athlete of the last century, who formerly won about 20 gold medals in four different events (100 m, 200 m, long jump and 4x100 relay), is called Carl, which is a nick that hides his true identity: Frederick Carlton Lewis. He was born on 1st July 1961 in Birmingham, Alabama, the same country of Jesse Owens for the will of doom: in fact his parents lived there fleetingly owing to their job. Third of five sons, he spent his childhood in Willingboro together with his younger sister Carol, Bill, his dad and Evelyn, his mother. Since his first years of life he could breath the soft and clean air of sport: his father used to train athletes at university and his mother was 6th at 80 m hurdles in the Pan-American games of 1951.He saw the Olympic games of 1968 on TV and could admire Bob Beamon: he was so impressed that after the jump of 8,90 m he wen
