9. Because he loved Gabe and he shared his memoris with Gabe. Jonas cared for Gabe. 10. Because they didnt ask for his wisdom often and they werent able for change. 11. He wants to let Jonas know that there was pain on the world, and the world isnt perfect at all. 12. The basic difference here is that Jonas's first experience with snow was pleasant, but second experience isnt. Jonas enjoyed the first experience. He was sledding and was exhilarating and fun. In the second experience he was sledding but he lost control and hurted himself badly. The second time, the snow was used to teach about the sort of pain that was rarely experienced in their community 13. It would be easier to the giver. Then giver felt better. And then the giver doesnt get old that fast.

" I smiled. "We could order in and have a movie night." "I'd like that." I was rewarded with the kiss Cary blew me as he headed to the door to show Trey out. When he returned to the kitchen he grabbed his wine and said, "All right. Spill it, Eva. You looked stressed." "I am," I agreed, grabbing the bottle and moving into the living room. "It's Gideon Cross, isn't it?" "Oh, yeah. But I don't want to talk about him." Although Gideon's pursuit was exhilarating, his goal sucked. "Let's talk about you and Trey instead. How did you two meet?" "I ran across him on a job. He's working part time as a photographer's assistant. Sexy, isn't he?" His eyes were bright and happy. "And a real gentleman. In an old-school way." "Who knew there were any of those left?" I muttered before polishing off my first glass. "What's that supposed to mean?" "Nothing. I'm sorry, Cary. He seemed great, and he obviously digs you. CHANGE YOUR THINKING CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Instead, take ac- tion. As Shakespeare’s Hamlet expresses it, “take arms against a sea of troubles, and by opposing end them.” Seeing yourself as the president of your own personal services corporation requires that you accept total responsibility for every- thing you are, and everything you ever will be. This is an enormous thought for many people. It is both scary and exhilarating. Just imagine! You are where you are and what you are because you have decided to be there. Everything you accomplish, for the rest of your life, will be largely determined by the actions that you take, or fail to take. You are responsible. You are in charge. You are in control. You are your own boss. And there are no limits except the limits that you allow the outside world to place on yourself and on

any effort. But the trees flew by at deadly speeds, always missing us by inches. I was too terrified to close my eyes, though the cool forest air whipped against my face and burned them. I felt as if I were stupidly sticking my head out the window of an airplane in flight. And, for the first time in my life, I felt the dizzy faintness of motion sickness. Then it was over. We'd hiked hours this morning to reach Edward's meadow, and now, in a matter of minutes, we were back to the truck. "Exhilarating, isn't it?" His voice was high, excited. He stood motionless, waiting for me to climb down. I tried, but my muscles wouldn't respond. My arms and legs stayed locked around him while my head spun uncomfortably. "Bella?" he asked, anxious now. "I think I need to lie down," I gasped. "Oh, sorry." He waited for me, but I still couldn't move. "I think I need help," I admitted. He laughed quietly, and gently unloosened my stranglehold on his neck. There was no resisting the iron strength of his hands

This developing concept of autonomy brings naturally with it the concept of freedom. An independent being is one with choices; a child with the newfound realization that he or she is such a being will want to explore the length and breadth of the options. Perhaps we should be neither surprised nor distressed, then, when our 2-year-olds strain incessantly against our will. They have come to a recent and exhilarating perspective of them- selves: they are freestanding human entities. Vital questions of choice, rights, and control now need to be asked and answered within their small minds. The tendency to fight for every liberty and against every restriction might be best understood, then, as a quest for information. By testing severely the limits of their freedoms (and, coincidentally, the patience of their parents), the children are discovering

trail continuing again beyond the stretch where the hillside had collapsed, and had no choice but to scramble like a crab across the shifting, slippery rock face, clinging by fingertips and toes, digging into the tumbling scree until I was back on the level surface of the broken path. It continued for a few hundred feet around a shoulder of the mountain, only to disappear again in another mudslide that had to be crossed by the finger-and-toe method. At first this seemed exhilarating, just the kind of minor wilderness challenge that I was after. But after the third or fourth time of edging out across a sheer, un stable cliff face with m u d d y water streaming over me, the process began to take its toll. M y arms and legs began to tremble from the unaccustomed exertion, my fingers and toes grew cramped.
