Ignorance and failure are important topics in Larkin's poetry. He has even dedicated poems to them (´´To Failure´´ and ´´Ignorance´´). I think that these poems show how uncertain he really was. He was afraid of other people and ready to fail. But still he continued to live. He also wrote a poem´´ Continuing to Live´´ to say that he is growing old but still is not giving up. Phillip Larkin was a poet who became disillusioned with many things in life. He was afraid of commitment and growing old. He thought that rest of the world is a threat to England by causing England to become more isolated. But actually he himself was creating a self- induced isolation from others. T h e y are often honorable men who have withdrawn from society's cor ruption, perhaps ex-cops or soldiers who became disillusioned and now operate in the shadow of the law as private eyes, smugglers, gamblers, or soldiers of fortune. We love these characters because they are rebels, thumbing their noses at society as we would all like to do.
