Levin is still looking for faith. The climax for Levin, the hero of Anna Karenina, comes when he speaks with a peasant named Theodore. Theodore tells him we should live not for our bellies, but for our souls. We must remember God and things that are bigger than us. Levin suddenly understands what this means, realizing that the best things are beyond our control as humans. How appropriate that a peasant helps Levin to realize all of this. "But now, since his marriage, when he had begun to confine himself more and more to living for himself, though he experienced no delight at all at the thought of the work he was doing, he felt absolutely convinced of its necessity, saw that it succeeded far better than in the past, and that it kept on growing more and more." Levin becomes ecstatic, thinking he understands the meaning of life. He thinks to himself that he will never again be anything but kind to everyone in sight. Shortly afterward, though, he yells at a peasant and becomes confused

To offer it the show of violence; For it is, as the air, invulnerable, And our vain blows malicious mockery. BERNARDO It was about to speak, when the cock crew. HORATIO And then it started like a guilty thing Upon a fearful summons. I have heard, The cock, that is the trumpet to the morn, Doth with his lofty and shrill-sounding throat Awake the god of day; and, at his warning, Whether in sea or fire, in earth or air, The extravagant and erring spirit hies To his confine: and of the truth herein This present object made probation. MARCELLUS It faded on the crowing of the cock. Some say that ever 'gainst that season comes Wherein our Saviour's birth is celebrated, The bird of dawning singeth all night long: And then, they say, no spirit dares stir abroad; The nights are wholesome; then no planets strike, No fairy takes, nor witch hath power to charm, So hallow'd and so gracious is the time. HORATIO So have I heard and do in part believe it.

Slang words are very colourful units that sound quite rude or coarse, and they are used by different social groups. Slang words do not live for a long time; often they loose their colloquial colouring and become just standard words (e.g. skyscraper, taxi, piano, photo, pulp). Slang is coined by Word Building and by transfer of meaning (e.g. "upper storey" head (metaphor), "bread" money (metaphor), "can / jar" confine place (metaphor), "sawbones" surgeon (metonymy), "skirt" woman (metonymy), "killing" astonishing (hyperbole), "as clear as mud" mud is never clear (irony). Cockney rhyming slang e.g. "trouble & strife" wife, "apples & pears" steers, "artful dodger" lodger). Slang has a great number of synonyms, especially for topics or things that are popular (e.g. "excellent" cold,

never have a right to compact or consent. Adam was an absolute monarch, and so are all princes ever since. Sir Robert Filmer's great position is, that men are not naturally free. This is the foundation on which his absolute monarchy stands, and from which it erects itself to an height, that its power is above every power, caput inter nubila, so high above all earthly and human things, that thought can scarce reach it; that promises and oaths, which tye the infinite Deity, cannot confine it. But if this foundation fails, all his fabric falls with it, and governments must be left again to the old way of being made by contrivance, and the consent of men ( ) making use of their reason to unite together into society. To prove this grand position of his, he tells us, p. 12. Menare born in subjection to their parents, and therefore cannot be free. And this authority of parents, he calls royal authority, p. 12, 14. ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC-THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996

ESTONIAN SYMPHONIC MUSIC. THE FIRST CENTURY 1896-1996.

From a historical standpoint we can divide the evolution of Estonian symphonic music into four periods: Russian Empire 1896-1918; Republic of Estonia 1918-1940; Soviet occupation 1940-1991; and the re-established independent Republic of Estonia since 1991. The latter period, however, began with some difficulties and serious problems. It is important to note that during the period 1908-2000 Estonian composers wrote 144 symphonies. This great number serves as motivation to confine myself to orchestral works. Moreover, this number may be somewhat larger if we take into account that I have no exact information about the activities of all Estonian composers living outside Estonia. From this uneven and variegated whole I had to choose works worthy of attention. Thus I have had to treat the symphonists in the same manner. I apologise if a colleague does not find his name mentioned. The volume for this extensive work is limited

(Classic examples of alleged failures include: "Everything [including all yard- sticks and other measuring devices] has just doubled in size." Eleventh-hour creation: "The entire physical universe came into existence just five minutes ago, complete with ostensible memories and records." Demon skepticism: "We are constantly and systematically being deceived by a powerful evil demon who feeds us specious experiences.")1 But the verificationists did not confine their concern to meaningfulness itself. The theory also took a more specific form, anticipated by C. S. Peirce (1878/1934). It addressed the individual meanings of particular sentences, and identified each sentence's meaning with that sentence's verification condition. Thus, the theory had a practical use, as an actual test for what an individual sentence does mean; it predicts the sentence's particular propositional con- tent. This is an important virtue, not shared by all its competitors

returning by the opposition of the strong Protestant party there to her indiscretions. She was a remarkable woman: beautiful, possessed of great personal charm, commanding the loyalty of her subordinates, courageous, unshakably devoted to her religion, but also unwise, stubborn, and capricious. Various Catholic factions had schemed more than once to seat her on the throne of England and so restore the realm to the Church. The chief result had been to confine Mary to various castles in England and to alert Walsingham to seek an opportunity to extirpate once and for all this cancer that threatened to destroy his own queen, Elizabeth. The opportunity arose in 1586. A former page of Mary's, Anthony Babington, began organizing a plot to have courtiers assassinate Elizabeth, incite a general Catholic uprising in England, and crown Mary. A conspiracy that involved the overthrow of the government naturally
