Anton Pavlovich Chekhov was born on 29 January (New Style), 1860, in Taganrog, a small port on the Sea of Azov, in southern Russia. As the son of a grocer and grandson of a serf, Chekhov was a first-generation intellectual. His modest background and upbringing are crucial to his development as a writer. Chekhov always felt that he missed out on childhood. It was a very hard lifeand it may have contributed to his poor health: he succumbed later on to the"family disease", tuberculosis, which led to his early death at the age of 44.His mother was a quiet, gentle soul who was full of stories of her early life. astounding golden age in poetry, prose and drama. Romanticism permitted a flowering of poetic talent: Vasily Zhukovsky and later his protégé Alexander Pushkin came to the fore. Prose was flourishing as well. The first great Russian novelist was Nikolai Gogol. Then came Ivan Turgenev, who mastered both short stories and novels. Leo Tolstoy and Fyodor Dostoyevsky soon became internationally renowned. In the second half of the century Anton Chekhov excelled in short stories and became a leading dramatist. The beginning of the 20th century ranks as the Silver Age of Russian poetry. The poets most often associated with the "Silver Age" are Konstantin Balmont, Valery Bryusov, Alexander Blok, Anna Akhmatova, Nikolay Gumilyov, Osip Mandelstam, Sergei Yesenin, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Marina Tsvetaeva and Boris Pasternak. This era produced some first-rate novelists and short-story
(portrait, nude, landscape, interior) by Olev Subbi, Leili Muuga (b. 1922), Enn Põldroos (b. 1933) and several elder masters. Estonian theatre of this decade may be characterised as casting light on the whole complexity of the relations between Man and society. Western dramatists had an important role: Arthur Miller, Friedrich Dürrenmatt, John Osborne and others. As for other foreign classics, plays by Ibsen, Strindberg and Chekhov remained popular. Young directors showed promise: Jaan Tooming (b. 1946), Mikk Mikiver (1937-2006), Evald Hermaküla (1941-2000). As a common denominator for the work of the young, activity of search and strengthening of form are remarkable.
