Solomon Islands

Islands. Papuan-speaking hunter-gatherers from New Guinea were settling the southern and eastern Solomon Islands by 25, 000 BC. They were the only inhabitants for thousands of years, until Austronesian-speaking proto-Melanesians began moving in around 4000 BC. Most people lived in small villages on tribal lands, practicing shifting cultivation, fishing, hunting, carving, weaving and canoe building. They worshipped ancestors. They were also head-hunters and cannibalism was common. Demography The population of the Solomon Islands is estimated to be approximately 450,000. It is comprised predominantly of Melanesians with the rest of the population consisting of Polynesians, Micronesians, and small pockets of Chinese and Europeans. The annual growth rate is around 3.5 percent. Most of the population (85 percent) live in villages. Only those with paid employment are found in the urban centers and provincial headquarters of Honiara (the capital),

that helpless and innocent children will "contribute to the feeding, and partly to the clothing of many thousands" in order to improve the economic situation of Ireland as well as the standards of living (Swift, 53). These words "can take the reader's breath away, both by the calmness with which it is offered and by the devastatingly quiet logic with which its implications are explained" (Cunningham, Reich, 240-241). However, the fact that author speaks about infanticide and cannibalism with such ease, and without any sense of guilt tempts us to believe, that his offer is untrustworthy and insincere. Actually, an attempt to apply such an absurd proposal in practice was not originally considered by the author; it is more likely a hidden satire, which is intended to draw the attention of the authorities to what is happening in the country. Alongside with the exquisite use of satire and cynicism the reader can also trace the paradoxical nature of the Swift's work

trustworthiness, individuals still tell white lies, and may often try to get away with minor thefts or bearings of false witness. And there is no punishment if they get away with it. Thirdly, as norms and values may bring out the best in people at times of crisis, they can also disappear, leading to quicker destruction of social order. An example of this would be Leningrad blockade during the Second World War, when many resorted to barbarianism and cannibalism, even though these ideas are strongly against civilized norms. Thus, norms help to contribute to the build-up of societal order, as they are generally beneficial to all individuals. Our values are more personal, but these do are affected by the norms in the societies. However, at times of crisis norms and values can lose their importance, and they can differ from being good (as politeness) or harmful, if established in a deviant group. This

US History: Native Americans and the first settlements

"Work or starve" was his motto, and each colonist was required to spend four hours per day farming. A new boatload of colonists and supplies sank off the coast of Bermuda on its way to help the hungry settlement. The winter of 1609-10, known as the "Starving Time," may have been the worst of all. Disease and hunger ravaged Jamestown. Two desperate colonists were tied to posts and left to starve as punishment for raiding the colonies' stores. One colonist even took to cannibalism, eating his own wife. The fate of the venture was precarious. Yet still more colonists arrived, and their numbers included women. Despite the introduction of tobacco cultivation, the colony was a failure as a financial venture. The king declared the Virginia Company bankrupt in 1624. Twenty slaves in Virginia Africans brought to Jamestown are the first slaves imported into Britain’s North American colonies Mayflower and Pilgrim Fathers
