The Saxons & Vikings

provinces on the Continent. Around 500, the Britons seem to have won several victories. One of their leaders was Ambrosius Aurelianus and one of their victories was at the place called Mount Badon. The main leader of the Britons at this time may have been the warrior later called King Arthur. By the 7th cent. the invaders managed to conquer the greater part of the land. The invaders came from 3 powerful tribes: · The Saxons settled from the Thames Estuary westwards, in the south of England; they formed the kingdoms of Sussex, Wessex, Essex & Middlesex · The Angles settled in East Anglia, the Midlands & Northumbria · The Jutes settled mainly in Kent, Hampshire & the Isle of Wight The name Jutes died out & the conquerors are generally referred to as the Anglo-Saxons. At first they spoke various dialects, but gradually the dialect of the Angles of Mercia became predominant.

Prehistory, Saxon invasion and Celtic Kingdoms

London was raided in 842. In 865 they started to settle in Britain. They quickly accepted Christianity and didn't disturb the local population. King Alfred was strong enough to win an important battle against the Vikings and they made a treaty which gave the Viking north and east of England. Rest of the country Alfred was recognised as king. Who should be king? When Danish Vikings started raiding westwards, the Saxon King Ethelred started gathering taxes to pay the Vikings so that they wouldn't raid anymore. When he died, Cnut (the leader of Danish Vikings) became king and after his death his son took over, but the also died soon so the Witan quickly gave the throne to Edward one of Saxon Ethelred's son. After his death the next king was Harold from Wessex. He had no claims for the throne so the Duke William of Normandy claimed it to himself

mainland Europe and its closest neighboring country France. 3. History Great Britain has a long and interesting history stretching back millennia's. The Iberians brought their metal working skills and the first real civilization to Britain in the 3rd millennium B.C. And were then overrun by the various Celtic tribes that begun in the 8th century B.C. The Celts introduced the tribal organization and an early form of agriculture before they were forced westwards to Cornwall, where the Celtic language still exists in different forms, by the Roman invasion begun in 43. AD. The Romans ruled Britain for over two hundred years and left behind three things of importance: their roads, the sights of important cities notably London, and the seeds of Christianity. The Latin way of life villas, arts, language and political organization all vanished, however after the invasions from Northern Europe by the Anglo-Saxons and Jutes from the 5th century onwards

ASPECTS OF BRITISH HISTORY

British Isles. The Celts1 had been arriving from Europe from the eighth century BC onwards. The Celts began to control all the lowland areas of Britain and, with new waves of settlers coming one after another, gradually spread all over Britain and the other islands. It seems that the Celts mixed with the Iberian peoples who were already there. It is also possible that they drove many of the older inhabitants westwards into Wales, Ireland and Scotland where they were eventually assimilated2. Celtic Culture The Celtic tribes continued the same kind of agriculture as the Bronze Age people before them. But the use of iron technology and more advanced ploughing methods made them highly successful farmers, the Celts used ox-drawn wheeled ploughs and this meant that richer, heavier land could be farmed. Under the Celts Britain became an important food producer
