Exactly two years later, the fledgling Moscow Arts Theatre, under the guidance of Stanislavsky and Nemerovich-Danchenko, began the first of twenty-six rehearsals of The Seagull. The director, Vladimir Nemirovich-Danchenko, had recognised the potential of Chekhov's innovative dramatic technique and it was his enthusiasm that ensured the first highly successful production of the play. Th e plot of Chekhov's sixteen-page masterpiece is not complicated. A man meets a woman while both are vacationing -- without their spouses -- in the southern resort villa of Yalta. Th ey have an aff air and return to their respective spouses -- he to his wife in Moscow, she to her husband in Saratov. While at fi rst the man, Dmitrij Gurov, regards the aff air as just another pleasant fl ing, soon to be forgotten, he later begins to remember and cherish the time he has spent with Anna in Yalta. He gradually becomes consumed with a desire to see her and travels to Saratov to fi nd her
soon divorce. In 1909, Delaunay began to paint a series of studies of the city of Paris and the Eiffel Tower. The following year, he married Terk, and the couple settled in a studio apartment in Paris, where they later had a son. At the invitation of Wassily Kandinsky, Delaunay joined The Blue Rider (Der Blaue Reiter), a Munich-based group of abstract artists, in 1911, and his art took a turn for the abstract. The outbreak of World War I found Delaunay and his wife vacationing in Spain, and they settled with friends in Portugal for the duration of the conflict. During this period, the couple took on several jobs designing costumes for the Madrid Opera, and Sonia Delaunay started a fashion design business. After the war, in 1921, they returned to Paris. Later in the evening Dexter swims to a raft on the lake, and runs into Judy, who is driving a motor boat. She asks him to take over while she rides on a surfboard attached to the boat. After this encounter, Judy invites Dexter to dinner, where their affair begins. He soon finds that he is one of a dozen men she is stringing along. After about 18 months, Dexter grows tired of chasing Judy and becomes engaged to Irene Scheerer, a kind but ordinary looking girl, while Judy is vacationing in Florida. Summary: Chapter VIII Jake does not see Brett or Cohn for a while. He receives a brief card from Brett, who is vacationing in San Sebastian. He also receives a note from Cohn reporting that he has left Paris for the countryside. Frances has left for England. Jake's friend Bill Gorton, an American veteran, arrives from the States.
