Ole´ ! Ole´ !' (1992, p. 93) In a less euphoric state of mind, but with an instinct of `instant recognition', Hoffman ponders, one year after, on what makes the atmosphere so unmistakably Romanian at Bucharest airport. Her translation attempts are wrapped in negative connotations: `crumpled, faded faces', a taxi driver that attaches himself to her, etc. Yet the pleasure of familiarity with the place (Hoffman, 1999, pp. 269Á 270) is still there.

cal sort of falsification has been introduced. Commercial producers often don't bother to get genuine testimonials. They merely hire actors to play the roles of av- erage people testifying in an unrehearsed fashion to an interviewer. It is amazing how bald-faced these "unrehearsed interview" commercials can be. (See the exam- ple in Figure 4.4.) The situations are obviously staged, the participants are clearly actors, and the dialogue is unmistakably prewritten. I know that whenever I encounter an influence attempt of this sort, it sets off in me a kind of alarm with a clear directive: Attention! Attention! Bad social proof in this situation. Temporarily disconnect automatic pilot. It's so easy to do. We need only make a conscious decision to be alert to counterfeit social evidence. We can relax until the exploiters' evident fakery is spotted, at which time we can pounce. And we should pounce with a vengeance

The distinction is amply illustrated by the original "Smith's murderer" example and others, even if Donnellan is wrong about the meanings and truth-values of the near-miss sentences. Donnellan's paper raises the question of specifying the circum- stances under which one succeeds in referring, by using a description, to the person or thing one intends to refer to, and he has shown that this does not always go by semantic referent. Further, the distinction unmistakably mat- ters to the truth-value of sentences that embed descriptions within clauses of certain kinds. Suppose I were to say: (13) I know that's right because I heard it from the town doctor. You might have to ask me, "You mean because she's a doctor and this is a medical matter, or do you mean because you heard it from her and she's also an authority on true crime?" (13)'s truth-value may depend on whether "the town doctor" is used attributively or referentially. Or consider:
