The huge vocabulary of the language is due to the free admission of words from other language. Old English had several inflections to show singular and plural, tense and person, but over the centuries words have been simpified. The loss of inflections had made English a very flexible lnguage. At present the English language encompasses the globe and is one of the major languages in the world. It has became a world language thanks to its establishment as a mother toungue outside Englnd, in all the continents of the world.
brothers George and Charles Merriam, who continued to publish the dictionary under the name Merriam-Webster. Webster's aim was to spell words more closely to the way they were pronounced and to create obvious differences to British English. So he got rif of the ''uu'' in colour and favour. He left out the double ''l'' in travelled and cancelled. He changed the centre to center. Not all Webster's spellings became popular: he tried to change soup into soop, toungue into tung, women to wimmen, etc. The strenght of Webster's dictionary, wich sold more than 100 million copies, was that he included lots of the words from the New World, such as tobacco, potato, maize, and many others. He also added slange expressions and numerous technical and medical terms taken from Latin. to become a global language, most of the respondents aknowledge its important role in many areas of people lives and the world on the whole, there is no doubt that having English as a 22 global language will have its advantages and disadvantages, however it does not mean that English is the only language suitable for this purpose, and hardly ever it will become a mother toungue to the majority of people, although people in Estonia have shown a great interest in this language as in the second language to learn. Most of the students understand the importance of the raised issue, the necessity of learning languages, though a slight correlation in the number of similar questions shows that questions were difficult for the students of gymnasium level to answer. 23
