Veosport (koerterakenditega) Esimeseks kelgukoerte spordivõistluseks võib tõenäoliselt pidada 1908.a Alaskal NomeKennel Club'i poolt korraldatud All Alaska Sweepstakes nime kandvat võistlust. Distantsi pikkuseks oli408 miili ehk ligi 660 km. Aasta hiljem osalesid All Alaska Sweepstakes võistlusel William Goosak'I poolt Siberist toodud esimesed siberi huskyd. Goosak'i huskyrakend oli edukas, ning saavutas kolmanda koha.Kui algusaegadel harrastati kelgukoertega vaid kelguvedu, siis tänapäeval on kelgukoertegaharrastatavaid spordialasid hoopis rohkem.
