programmes. The presenter decided what to say and in what order to say it. Next a “story board” is drawn up which lays out the script word for word. What makes a weather forecast more complicated than other programmes are the maps and electronic images which are required. The computer has to be programmed so that the pictures appear in the correct order during the bulletin. The time allocated for each broadcast can also alter. This is because the weather report is screened after the news, which can vary in length. The weather forecaster doesn't always know how much time is avail-able, which means that he/she has to be thoroughly prepared so that the material can be adapted to the time available. Another related complication is that the weather forecast has to be a live broadcast; it cannot be pre-recorded. Live shows are very nerve-racking for the presenter because almost anything can go wrong

the complex is deathly grey and cramped, and it's all too easy to get lost in a dreary world of concrete constructs. The ugly Barbican redeems itself when it comes to culture. The Museum of London has its buildings in the grounds, and you can catch concerts by the London Symphony Orchestra. A lively set of jazz, classical and contemporary pieces are played in the 2,000-seater concert hall. Contemporary art displays are held in The Curve, and the gallery on Level 3, and art-house movies are screened in the art centre's three cinemas. They even have some stage- plays and shows in the Barbican Theatre. Tucked away amongst the block solid walls is St. Giles Cripplegate. It is one of the very few churches to survive both the Great Fire in 1666 and the Luftwaffe's bombs. It is the jewel in the Barbican Centre's concrete crown: Oliver Cromwell was married here in 1620, and the grave of poet John Milton is hidden in the crypt.

The width of a CD pit is approximately the wavelength of green light. The tracks are separated by approximately three times the wavelength of green ligh Diffraction from these features (so very close to the wavelength of light) is what gives CD disks their beautifu colors. A thin layer (50-100 nm) of metal (aluminum, gold or silver) covers the pits. An additional thin layer (10-30 microns) of polymer covers the metal. Finally, a label is silk-screened on the top. Notice that the pits are far closer to the silk screened side of the disk (20 microns) than they are to the read-side of the disk (1.55 mm). Thus, it is easier to permanently damage a disk by scratching the top -- than the bottom! C. Reading the pits The CD disk is actually read from the bottom. Thus, from the viewpoint of the laser beam reading the disk, th "pit" in the CD is actually a "bump". The polycarbonate itself is part of the optical system for reading the pits
