Fountains When the square was first built in 1845, the fountains' primary purpose was not aesthetics, but rather to reduce the open space available and the risk of riotous assembly. They were originally fed by a steam engine behind the National Gallery from an artesian well underground. Further restoration work became necessary and was completed by May 2009. The pump system was replaced as only one of three pumps was functioning. bout of influenza. Sandringham became the home to a second Royal couple when Prince George, the second son of the Prince and Princess of Wales and by then heir to the throne, married Princess May of Teck, the fiancée of the late Duke of Clarence. They moved into a house on the estate which came to be known as York Cottage. One of Prince George's innovations at Sandringham was the founding of the first Royal pigeon loft in 1886. Almost annually several were entered in international contests; pigeons from the Royal lofts also saw active service with the Royal Air Force in the Second World War. Despite being able to spend less time at Sandringham after his accession in 1901, King Edward VII's interest in the estate never waned, and he continued to make improvements all his life. Following his death in 1910, Sandringham was left to Queen Alexandra, who continued to live in the 'Big House' in her widowhood until her death in 1925. The new King George V and Queen Mary continued

ROMANTISM

Kuigi Blake'i tööde originaalsus ja intuitiivsus kuulutasid ette kunsti edasist arengut, oli ta liiga individualistlik, et tal oleks sel ajal järgijaid olnud. William Blake Auguries of Innosence To see a world in a grain of sand, And a heaven in a wild flower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, And eternity in an hour. A robin redbreast in a cage Puts all heaven in a rage. A dovehouse fill'd with doves and pigeons Shudders hell thro' all its regions. A dog starv'd at his master's gate Predicts the ruin of the state. A horse misused upon the road Calls to heaven for human blood. Each outcry of the hunted hare A fibre from the brain does tear. A skylark wounded in the wing, A cherubim does cease to sing. The gamecock clipt and arm'd for fight Does the rising sun affright. Every wolf's and lion's howl Raises from hell a human soul.

"What could it be?" she wondered, "Hey, Mystery, may I take your name?" But the kitten seemed disappointed, so she decided not to do so. "Well, but I can't sign it as the-nameless-one! Oh, I do have an idea! My name will be Misery after all, so many years have passed with that feeling only... What do you think, Mystery?" The cat smiled and brought a marzipan candy. "Is it for me? Thank you so much!" Mystery grinned again and flew out to catch some pigeons. The little girl wrote: Dear Queen, I am very sorry for not showing up in your court and on your coronation ceremony; however, I do have a considerable reason: my deep feelings for the last Queen and my mother hadn't fully calmed as you probably know, there was a disastrous illness in the kingdom that took many dear ones to me. And I am truly sorry for not writing this letter sooner, but, to be honest, I had suffered loneliness for so long, that, eventually, I had forgotten my name.

superencipherment, retaining codenumbers to facilitate this instead of switching to codewords. This evolution was essentially complete by the 1860s. The large, one-part code had replaced the small, two-part nomenclator in high-level military and diplomatic cryptography. Meanwhile, the telegraph, author of this development, was creating something new in war—signal communications, or voluminous command and reconnaissance messages. Of course such messages had existed before, with torches, pigeons, and couriers, but in so rarefied a form that they were not even called "signal communications." The telegraph enabled commanders, for the first time in history, to exert instantaneous and continuous control over great masses of men spread over large areas. These tactical messages required protection: telegraph wires could be tapped. Neither the old nomenclator nor the new code would do. They were too easy to capture in combat, too hard to reissue quickly and
