Ometi aitab teatud terminoloogia valdamine erakorralise meditsiini tehnikul oma igapäevase tööga paremini hakkama saada. Meditsiinisõnavara eesmärgiks ei ole teadmatute kiusamine, vaid lühike, täpne ja ühtne suhtlemisviis. Meditsiinilise terminoloogia tundmine hõlbustab ka välismaalasest patsiendi abistamist, kuna diagnoosid ja põhimõisted on rahvusvaheliselt kasutatavad. Need oskussõnad on aegade jooksul välja kasvanud kreeka- ja ladinakeelsetest terminitest. Näiteks viitab sõna insult (ladina keelest pärinev nimetus ajurabanduse kohta) sõnale insultare ’tuikuma’. Kreeka keelest pärineb sama tähendusega sõna (sünonüüm) apopleksia, mis tähendab lööki. Viimasel ajal võetakse palju oskussõnu ja lühendeid üle inglise keelest. Näiteks võib tuua
