Harrods founder Charles Henry Harrod started his business in 1824, aged 25. Harrod's son Charles Digby Harrod built the business into a thriving retail operation selling medicines, perfumes, stationery, fruit and vegetables and employed 100 peope by 1880. In 1883 the store burnt to the ground but in short order, a new building was built on the same site. In 16 November 1898 Harrods debuted England´s first escalator.
