without blood. Its aim for Estonia was to separate from the Soviet Union. The Singing Revolution lasted over four years, with various protests and acts of defiance. Independence was declared on the late evening of August 20 in 1991. Soon, on 11 September 1988, a massive song festival, called "Song of Estonia", was held at the Tallinn Song Festival Ground. This time about 300,000 people came together, which was more than a quarter of all Estonians. Estonians sang national songs and hymns that were strictly forbidden during the years of the Soviet occupation, as Estonian rock musicians played. On that day political leaders were participating actively, and were for the first time insisting on the restoration of independence. Finally, the Soviet Union fell apart in 1991. I would say that this is the most glorious moment in the history of the Republic of Estonia, because not only Estonians but also other countries have a change to decide about our future by ourselves.

The way the flames spread shows the luck of the house in the coming year. When the fire burns, psalms are sung, and when it sinks, everyone leaps over the embers making wishes. Early on Christmas morning everyone goes to Mass. At this Mass another bonfire is lit in the middle of the floor. While the wood is blazing, ancient hymns are sung and the celebrant carries a figure of the Christ Child around the building. After this the celebrant then touches the nearest person in a "touch of peace". This touch is passed from one to another until everyone has received it. Spiritual power, hidden in music, is the foundation for its influence. Thus national expression as an exponent of value in music is not decisive. The music of the Baroque masters, medieval music and ancient sacred hymns captivates without us thinking about the composer. Nationalism in music cannot be prescribed or demanded; its features appear naturally and fruitfully. Estonian symphonic music has been performed on several continents gaining acknowledgement, first thanks to the Estonian born conductor Neeme Järvi. Young composers have won prizes in Soviet Union musical composition contests, the artist level of which was always high. Tamberg and Jürisalu rose to prominence as the
