Today this animal is under the protection but they still are in danger. Koalas from the northern populations are typically smaller and lighter in colour than the other. Most of their food consists of eucalypt leaves but sometimes they eat other leaves too. There is about 600 species of eucalypt, koalas eat only 30. Because they get so little energy from their diet, koalas must limit their energy use and sleep 20 hours a day. They typically eat and sleep in the same tree. On very hot days a koala may climb down to the coolest part of the tree which is colder than the surrounding air. The koala will hug the tree to lose heat.

response to that after fire. Tree clearing in many savanna communities, although causing a dramatic reduction in basal area and canopy cover, often leaves a high percentage of woody plants alive either as seedlings too small to be affected or as plants capable of re-sprouting from lignotubers and broken stumps. A population of woody plants equal to half or more of the original number often remains following pulling of eucalypt communities, even if all the trees over 5 metres are uprooted completely. Exotic plant species A number of exotic plants species have been introduced to the savannas around the world. Amongst the woody plant species are serious environmental weeds such as Prickly Acacia (Acacia nilotica), Rubbervine

in temperate rainforests in the south. The biggest family of the native plants is the myrties. They include more than 500 species of eucalyptus, or gum trees. Only the big river red gum is seen everywhere. These can be found beside rivers and dry riverbeds. Some gum trees are valuable timber species and have been cut down for many years. Gum tree leaves are full of oils, which evaporate easily. That why the Blue Mountains are called like that, because the evaporateing eucalypt oils, which make the air blue. The water controls the type of vegetation in a country. The two main types of vegetation are the eucalyptus or gum trees and acacia or wattles. The eucalypts are found all over Australia. There are more than 500 varieties of gum trees in Australia. Australia is the home of some 600 species of acacia. These trees develop smaller, leathery leaves to avoid loss of water. Australia has over 155 million hectares of native forest, about 80 per cent of which are eucalypt. Animal life Australia is a continent sized museum of ancient animals. Anteater and platypus are the two of the strangest animals in the world. They are really reptile mammals. They have hair like cats and dogs, but they lay shelled eggs like snakes and turtles. And they are found only in Australia. Another group of Australian mammals, the marsupials, are less like reptiles than the anteater and the platypus, but they are not highly developed mammals either.
