Käis koolis inglismaal. Koliti tagasi ameerikasse 11a. Jätkas kooliteed Richmordis. Esimene armastus suri noorelt ja oli ta koolikaaslane ema. Saadetakse õppima virginia ülikooli, tekkis probleeme alkohooliga ja hasartmängu sõltuvus ja teda aitas välja ta kasuisa. 1827 läks sõjaväkke 2 aastat hiljem läks erru, ja pärast astub Westi pointi sõjaväeakadeemiasse. Kasuisa ütleb temast lahti. 1834 suri ta kasuisa ja ei pärandanud talle midagi. Läheb Baltimore tädi juurde. Kirjutab seal luuletusi ja sai isegi auhinna, hakkab seal tööle ajakirjanikuna. Konrad Mäe elukäik ja kunstnik inimesena Konrad Mägi sündis 1878. aastal Hellenurme koolitares, mõisa abivalitseja perekonnas, maadeuurija A. Th. von Middendorffi mõisamaadel. Mäe sünni ajaks oli tema isa Andres loobunud külakooliõpetaja ametist tulusama mõisavalitseja oma kasuks mitmel pool Tartu kandis. Mägi õppis 18881889 Uderna ministeeriumikoolis, seejärel Tartus Pelbergi algkoolis ja 1891. aastal linnakoolis. Tema kunstnikutee sai alguse 1899. aastal, mil mööblitööstuses puunikerdust õppiv noormees saadeti Tartusse Saksa Käsitööliste Seltsi joonistuskursustele, kust ta sai kunstialased algteadmised. Harrastas samal ajal innukalt näitekunsti, viiulimängu ja mitut spordiala.
