1889. aastal jätkas ta õpinguid Harvardi Ülikoolis, seal hakkas ta huvituma poliitikast ning seetõttu võttis ta eliitprofessoritelt eratunde. Sajandivahetusel astus ta Vabariiklikku Parteisse. Peale Harvardi Ülikooli bakalaureuse kraadi saamist liikus ta edasi Kolumbia Õigusteaduskonda.3 Poliitilise karjääri algus ning haigus Roosevelti poliitiline karjäär algas, kui kandideeris 1910. aasta New Yorki senati valimistel Hyde Parki ja Dutchess maakonna alale, see ala ei olnud aastast 1884 valinud ühtegi demokraati. Ta oli New Yorki demokraatide seas väga populaarne ning valiti 1912. aasta valimistel tagasi põllumajanduskommitee eesistujaks.
