Australia/ Austraalia

Australia is, in fact, a continent-sized museum of ancient animals, modernized along certain lines by their own separate evolution. Two of the strangest animals in the world the spiny anteater and the platypus, only live in Australia. They are reptile-mammals. Another group of Australian mammals are the marsupials. These are the kangaroo and the wombat, for example. They do not lay eggs, but their young are born before they are fully developed. A little kangaroo crawls into its mother's pouch and stays there for almost three months. Dogs, cats, and rabbits brought to Australia by men are rapidly destroying the gentler marsupials. There is only one marsupial still alive in the United States today it is the opossum. Many of the plants of Australia aren't found anywhere else. Agriculture. Australia's farms are highly mechanized and therefore require the minimum of human labour. Only about 5 per cent of the country's workers are farmers.

E.M.Remarque "Läänerindel Muutuseta"

The men hear the wrenching sounds of wounded horses shrieking in agony. Detering is particularly horrified because he is a farmer and loves horses. After the wounded men are gathered, those in charge of shooting the wounded animals do their job. Detering declares with disgust that using horses in war is the "vilest baseness." As the trucks drive the men back, Kat becomes restless. A flurry of bombs then lands around them. The men take cover in a nearby graveyard. Paul crawls under an uncovered coffin for protection. Kat shakes him from behind to tell him to put his gas mask on. After he dons his mask, Paul helps a new recruit put his on. He then dives into a hole created by an exploding shell, reasoning that shells seldom hit the same place twice. Kat and Kropp join him. Paul takes a breath on the valve of the mask, hoping that the mask is airtight. Later, Paul climbs out and sees a soldier not wearing his mask who appears to be okay. Paul

fat tongue. The platypus has a wide bill like a duck and a wide flat tail. It swims well but it can only stay under water for a few minutes. First it shuts its ears and eyes. Another group of Australian mammals, the marsupials, are less like reptiles than the spiny anteater and the platypus, but they are not highly developed mammals either. The kangaroo is born after seven weeks inside its mother. It is completly blind and only an inch or an inch a half long. It crawls into its mother's pouch and attaches itself to a nipple there. There it stays almost three months, when it begins to stick its head out. It is six months old before it is big and strong to leave the pouch. The biggest of the fifty diffrent kinds is the red kangaroo. They have big strong back legs and tails, and an adult can measure 2.4 metres high. They can jump more than four metres and travel at seventy kilometres an hour. Kangaroos eat grass and leaves and live in groups about twelve.

Some of the marsupials in Australia look very much like higher animals. The koala, which looks like a live teddy bear, is not really a bear at all but a marsupial. Today Australian marsupials are dying out. Dogs, cats, and rabbits brought to Australia by men are rapidly
