Russian Orthodoxy was prohibited and the government started promoting atheism ( " T h e r i s e o f , " ) . In 1922, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) was created. At first the new nation had only four members: the Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian and Transcaucasian Soviet republics.
