u(c1, c2) = min {c1, 2c2} a. Solve the exercise by finding first and second period optimal consumption and show your results on the graph. max u(c1, c2) = min {c1, 2c2} s.t. c2 = m2 + (1+r)*(m1-c1) => c2 = 40000 + 1,1*(20000-c1) c2 = 62000 – 1,1*c1 c1 = 2*c2 c2 = 62000 – 2,2*c2 c2 = 19375 c1 = 38750 c2 40K u 19375 20K 3875 c1 0 Consumer is borrower. He borrows 18750 in the first period, then returns 18750*1,1 in the second, therefore second period consuming is decreased by borrowed+interest amount.

Charles, however, suspects nothing. His adoration for his wife and his stupidity combine to blind him to her indiscretions. His professional reputation, meanwhile, suffers a severe blow when he and Homais attempt an experimental surgical technique to treat a club-footed man named Hippolyte and end up having to call in another doctor to amputate the leg. Disgusted with her husband's incompetence, Emma throws herself even more passionately into her affair with Rodolphe. She borrows money to buy him gifts and suggests that they run off together and take little Berthe with them. Soon enough, though, the jaded and worldly Rodolphe has grown bored of Emma's demanding affections. Refusing to elope with her, he leaves her. Heartbroken, Emma grows desperately ill and nearly dies. By the time Emma recovers, Charles is in financial trouble from having to borrow money to pay off Emma's debts and to pay for her treatment

Instead, we have to be sensitive to only one thing related to liking in our contacts with compliance practitioners: the feeling that we have come to like the practitioner more quickly or more deeply than we would have expected. Once we notice this feeling, we will have been tipped off that there is probably some tactic being used, and we can start taking the necessary countermeasures. Note that the strategy I am suggesting borrows much from the jujitsu style favored by the compliance professionals themselves. We don't attempt to restrain the influence of the factors that cause liking. Quite the contrary. We DEFENSE . . . allow those factors to exert their force, and then we use that force in our campaign against those who would profit by them. The stronger the force, the more conspic-
