This review is spoiler free for those who have not seen this film yet and so may not contain some plot points. Set in 1954 US Marshall Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) accepts the case of a missing woman who has escaped from a mental institute for the criminally insane. He is assigned a new partner Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo). Teddy though has another reason for accepting the case, to find a man he believes killed his wife. He is haunted by images of his past atrocities committed in World War II and by visions of his dead wife. As he investigates he becomes more and more sure that there is something sinister being kept secret on the island and more afraid that he may never escape. That probably doesn't really do the plot justice but I'm afraid if I say to much I'll give away the ending. The way that Scorsese has crafted this film is really remarkable. The scenes are layered in a
of southern Ireland, which became the Republic of Eire in 1949. Ulster was allowed to remain within the United Kingdom. Eventually, in 1969, the British government sent in the British Army to restore peace, but they became the enemies. Relations reached their worst point in 1972 on Bloody Sunday when British troops fired on a civil right demonstration in Derry, killing thirteen people. In reaction to this and other atrocities, the IRA began a military and terrorist campaign against British rule which is still continuing. Nowadays there are many people who want uniting the two parts of Ireland, but there are also as many people who can't imagine living without British rule.

For example crowds (which are temporary collective egoic entities) are capable of committing atrocities that the individual away from the crowd would not be. Nations not infrequently engage in behavior that would be immediately recognizable as psychopathic in an individual. As the new consciousness emerges, some people will feel called upon to form groups that reflect the enlightened consciousness. These groups will not be collective egos. The individuals who make up these groups will have no need to define their identity through them. They no longer look to any
