schools and collages. The city also provides private education. American children must complete 12 years of education. In New York City this lasts from the ages of 6 to 17. Children begin at elementary school, move on to middle school and finish at high school, where most gain a diploma. New York offers a variety of high schools for pupils who want to specialize from their teenage years, for example the School of the Performing Arts. New Yorkers seem to be always on the move. In Manhattan the pavements are full of pedestrians, while cars, buses and taxis jam the roads. Driving in central New York is only for the daring, so people often take one of the famous yellow taxis instead. There are about 12 000 of them in the city. Another way to get around overground is to take a bus. New York's express buses do not make many stops, so they go much faster than regular buses but they still cannot avoid the jams.

Living in the Big Apple

Furthermore, there are a lot of shops in New York which are open 24 hours a day, so everything is at your fingertips. On the other hand, there is a lot of pollution and noise in the Big Apple, but I think it's acceptable for a hudge city like New York. Besides the pollution and noise, there is a much bigger problem in the Big Apple and that problem is crime. It's becoming a dangerous place to live, but the clampdown on crime has improved the city tremendously. The agressive nature of New Yorkers is also a problem peole are pushing you out of the way on the subway or in the street. So there are both positive and negative aspects to live in the Big Apple, and if you are thinking of living there you need to weigh up the pros and cons.

In addition, for effective speechmaking, avoid the monotone voice (particularly Estonians!). · When we want to convey something very important and serious, we all tend to talk in a lower tone (and, inciden tally, at a slower pace.) · In ordinary conversation, we speak in the midrange between bass and treble. · And when we are excited or a little silly, our voices creep up to the higher range. Accents Do Southerners or "New Yorkers" have an advantage or disadvantage? Rush's rule for answering that question is as follows: " . . . I don't mess with it unless the accent will hurt another person's credibility or render him unintelligible. For example, when someone with a downhome accent tries to sell stocks in a metropolitan area, the accent might not help." Laughter This may surprise you, but as a speaker don't be afraid to laugh, where and when appropriate. Laughter is a wonderful sound. And it's contagious

..And the cars. Jesus Christ. The frenetic flow of tightly packed cars was unlike anything I'd ever seen anywhere. There was always an ambulance, patrol car, or fire engine trying to part the flood of yellow taxis with the electronic wail of ear-splitting sirens. I was in awe of the lumbering garbage trucks that navigated tiny one-way streets and the package delivery drivers who braved the bumper-to-bumper traffic while facing rigid deadlines. Real New Yorkers cruised right through it all, their love for the city as comfortable and familiar as a favorite pair of shoes. They didn't view the steam billowing from potholes and vents in the sidewalks with romantic delight and they didn't blink an eye when the ground vibrated beneath their feet as the subway roared by below, while I grinned like an idiot and flexed my toes. New York was a brand new love affair for me. I was starry-eyed and it showed.
