Mardi Gras esitlus

Mardi Gras parade floats dates back almost as long as the parades themselves. Originally, the beaded necklaces were made from glass, but the Krewes switched to plastic in the mid 1900s. Throws started in the 1920s when Rex and a few other Krewes started throwing small trinkets. In addition, millions of cups, stuffed animals, plastic cups, small toys and even bags and toy coins known as "doubloons"are decorated with krewe logos and thrown to parade-watchers. Mardi Gras around the world In Ireland, Australia, and Canada, Mardi Gras is known as "Pancake Tuesday", while in Britain it is popularly known as "Pancake Day". In the United Kingdom and Ireland, the week before Ash Wednesday is called "shrovetide", ending on Shrove Tuesday. Other cities famous for Mardi Gras celebrations include Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Barranquilla, Colombia, Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, Mexico and New Orleans, Louisiana andUnited States.

most talented artists. It is not uncommon for acclaimed directors, writers, or ac- tors to demand the elimination of canned responses from the television projects they undertake. These demands are only sometimes successful, and when they are, it is not without a battle. What can it be about canned laughter that is so attractive to television ex- ecutives? Why are these shrewd and tested people championing a practice that their potential watchers find disagreeable and their most creative talents find personally insulting? The answer is both simple and intriguing: They know what the research says. Experiments have found that the use of canned merriment causes an audience to laugh longer and more often when humorous material is presented and to rate the material as funnier (Provine, 2000). In addition, some evidence indicates that canned laughter is most effective for poor jokes (No- sanchuk 8{ Lightstone, 1974).

an astute critic of popular movies and books, muttering under her breath phrases like "I hope he dies a horrible death," when a villain had done something particularly heinous to one of her heroes on the screen. If the movie didn't deliver a poetically appropriate fate for the villain, she was disappointed and that movie went down in her books as a bad one. Once in a while, the strategy of thwarting the audience's desires is effective, to challenge the assumptions of the watchers, to reflect a harsh view of reality, or to depict a tragic, doomed situation as a k i n d of warning to the audience. For example, in the novel and movie Remains of the Day, the buder to the family of a British lord spends his entire life failing to connect emotionally with other people. His wish, we might say, is to have a sense of tight control over his personal life, one area where he does not compromise. T h i s masks a deeper desire, the need to make an emotional

reading their codes. If they changed them, might not this deprive the Allies of possibly even more valuable intelligence in the future? Nimitz felt that this bird in the hand was well worth stay two in the bush. Nevertheless, he sought to minimize the danger by following Layton's suggestion of a cover story. This was to the effect that Australian coastwatchers had radioed in the Yamamoto flight information, probably getting it from friendly natives around Rabaul. The coast-watchers enjoyed a superexcellent reputation among airmen and so the story would ring true. If it got back to the Japanese, they might never even think about codes. Even if they did realize that the Allies were reading their codes, either by capture or by cryptanalysis, they could probably do no more than issue a new edition of JN25 and perhaps tighten cryptographic security. But this had happened before, and Allied cryptanalysts had broken the new codes. The most realistic assessment

ThisHoused will be the shortest chapter on life-extension ever written. Let it begin, as all good short chapters do, with a story of two monkeys: Canto and Owen. at the University of Wisconsin, these two rhesus monkeys are as close to identical as possible, with one exception. Canto is on a diet. Speci cally, his calories are restricted to 30% less than normal. He is part of a semi-fasting group of monkeys that has been on the animal equivalent of Weight Watchers® for two decades. Owen, in the feasting control group, is a stark contrast. He eats whatever the hell he wants. To date, in this 20+ year experiment, 37 percent of the "eat, drink, and be merry" group have died due to causes related to old age. The calorie-counting group has a much lower death rate, almost two-thirds lower. Cancel our reservations at the Cheesecake Factory! In fact, it's time to cancel dinner forever! Or, wait a second, is that really all there is to the story
