Native English drama, which had existed at least since medieval times, was the wellspring
of Elizabethan drama. Although Classical drama had been known earlier, its initial
influence came in the 1560s, with the translation of Latin drama, especially the revenge
tragedies of Seneca and the comedies of Plautus and Terence.

As Puritan influence grew in England, more and more complaints were made about the
ungodliness of the theatres, and they were occasionally closed. The Puritan influence that
