Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832)­ Scottish historical novelist and poet; wrote: ballads, narrative poetry, and verse tales, novels. He maintained the anonymous habit he had begun with Waverley. He became unfamos, when Austen's star rose. Jane Austen ­ is considered merely an entertaining "woman's novelist" in the 19th century. She was seen as the major English novelist of the first decades of the 19th c. Austen wrote about upper-middle class society and women's role in it.
