Bridges discussed in this essay illustrate important types or technological turning points and are
listed at the end. Some, like the Pont du Gard (France) and the Iron Bridge (UK), are already
inscribed on the World Heritage List. Others may be candidates for listing given adequate study,
comparison, and evaluation. Not every potential World Heritage bridge candidate is cited. It is the
job of TICCIH and its member countries to identify and make a case for outstanding bridges so they
can be appreciated and protected like the great architectural and natural monuments already
designated.
