Kaheksakanna kui populaarse ornamendi tähendus Eestis läbi aegade
subchapters. First subchpater talks about the origin of the ornament and how it came to the
folk art of Estonia. Second one talks about the meanings of the ornament in past. It came out
that «kaheksakand» meant protection, luck, home and spirituality. In Christianity the
ornament symbolises the Star of Petlemma and also the reborning of Christ. Final supchapter
provides information about the meanings of «kaheksakand» today. The people surveyd knew
little about the meaning of it. However, some meanings for example corn flower, star and
protection were mentioned. Also it came out that symbol of one Estonian party is
«kaheksakand».
To sum up, it can be said that the importance of folk art is fading away in every day life and
folk art symbols nowadays are mostly used in professional art. The meanings of
«kaheksakand» and other ornaments are known only when people have read about them.
