has given impetus to a significant field of academic study. Since then, there has been
increasing sociological interest in children which has provided a new perspective around the
idea of children as social actors, and that childhood is not a natural phenomenon but a social

construct. It is now recognised that childhood is a culturally constructed phenomenon
arising from human interaction.5 However, the new knowledge of children as competent
