Estuary English - A Controversial Issue?
The process of EE creation is not new and
the motivations for its emergence may only be speculated about although the most
plausible ones seem to be dialect levelling and koineisation in the south-east region.
These phenomena are a consequence of long-term accommodation of speakers from
various backgrounds. The role of the media in its spread is overestimated, but one
thing is certain about them. They have created animage of a monster that endangers
the `pure' English language.
