Continuing Katherine Mansfield's short story "Mrs. Brill"
She wondered “Why?” Why did the world take Ann from
her. She was so fragile, sweet and delicate. Miss Brill wished in her heart that she would have
been the one whose life tuberculosis would have taken. Then her Ann could have had her life
and she could have fulfilled her dreams.
She opened her eyes and put the box with the photos away. She stood up and moved outside
to the garden. In the garden there was a big oak tree and next to it there was an enormous
rosebush. She looked at the rosebush and the oak tree and all her inside warmed up. A few
seconds later she felt herself smiling. The oak tree and the rosebush had a special meaning for
her. Her dear passed away husband George had planted these there with the help of Ann. It
had been a gift for Miss Brill’s 30th birthday.
“The oak tree symbolizes you, how strong you are and also it shows how strong and big our
love for you is,” states the man.
