David contrasts with the other national patron saints of the British Isles, because he is a native of the country of which he is patron saint. He became known as a teacher and preacher, founding monastic settlements and churches. He rose to a bishopric, and and went on pilgrimages to Jerusalem and Rome. St David's Cathedral now stands on the site of the monastery he founded in the remote and inhospitable valley of 'Glyn Rhosyn' in Pembrokeshire. *The Synod of Whitby 664 The Roman monks who were sent to convert the "English" to Christianity, found that the missionaries from Ireland observed Easter at a different time from that which had been appointed by the Roman church. King Oswy, who was seriously concerned about the religious differences decided to call a meeting of church leaders in 664 to resolve things once and for all. This became known as The Synod of Whitby as it was held at Hilda's monastery
