in 2002. while ago. Right after that I started volunteering for one of our local Photocopiable © Oxford University Press 15 Maturita Solutions Upper-Intermediate Workbook Key non-profit organisations. The program is called Reassurance. Every day of the year I make several phone calls. I call elderly, housebound people in our town who live alone. I check in on them to make sure they are safe. As long as they answer the phone and are okay, I'm happy. And if they want to chat, I can chat with them. If they don't respond and I haven't been notified that they are away, I've got to take action. I call their family members, the security office at their apartment building, or the police. I
errant hero of an important moral code. However, a hero may rebel against a nagging conscience. Would-be Mentors should remember that in the original Collodi story Pinocchio squashed the cricket to shut him up. T h e angel on a hero's shoulder can never offer arguments as colorful as those of the devil on the opposite side. MOTIVATION Another important function of the M e n t o r archetype is to motivate the hero, and help her overcome fear. Sometimes the gift alone is sufficient reassurance and motivation. In other cases the M e n t o r shows the hero something or arranges things to motivate her to take action and commit to the adventure. 42 MENTOR The Mentor may act as a conscience for the Hero. In some cases a hero is so unwilling or fearful that he must be pushed into the adventure
and a warning. Austin called this type of feature "illocutionary force," and he contrasted it with "locutionary" or propositional content.1 In different contexts, the same declarative may have different illocution- ary forces. "That Rottweiler has been starved for three days and is peevish" could have the force of a threat rather than a warning; or it could be merely an observation; or (notice) it could be a soothing reassurance. Even children recognize differences in potential force: A complaint such as "If you don't quit it I'm going home" is met by the gibe, "Is that a threat or a promise?" Turning to nondeclaratives, it is considerably more obvious that they have distinctive varieties of forces. In fact, the point of moods such as interroga- tive and imperative seems to be to indicate ranges of illocutionary force. (13) Are you a member of the Salvation Army?
"I can't help it." The arrival of the elevator was a relief. He caught my hand and pulled me inside. After he put his key in the panel, he tugged me closer. "I'm going to kiss you, Eva." "I don't-" He pulled me into him and sealed his mouth over mine. I resisted as long as I could; then I melted at the feel of his tongue stroking slow and sweet over mine. I'd wanted his kiss since we'd had sex. I wanted the reassurance that he valued what we'd shared, that it meant something to him as it had to me. I was left bereft once again when he pulled away. "Come on." He pulled the key out as the door opened. Gideon's redheaded receptionist said nothing this time, although she eyed me strangely. In contrast, Gideon's secretary, Scott, stood when we approached and greeted me pleasantly by name. "Good afternoon, Miss Tramell." "Hi, Scott." Gideon gave him a curt nod
Either way, it's signi cant that boys born with hypospadias, the opening of the urethra on the underside of the penis rather than at the tip, are ve times more likely to have vegetarian vs. omnivore mothers. Dr. Richard Sharpe, director of the Medical Research Centre for Reproductive Biology in Edinburgh, Scotland, echoes my conclusion about soy: "I've seen numerous studies showing what soy does to female animals. Until I have reassurance that it doesn't have this effect on humans, I will not give soy to my children." Food is complex and humans are overconfident. Consider the antioxidants we've identi ed thus far in garden-variety thyme, as listed by Michael Pollan in a New York Times Magazine article: 4-Terpineol, alanine, anethole, apigenin, ascorbic acid, beta carotene, ca eic acid, camphene, carvacrol, chlorogenic acid, chrysoeriol, eriodictyol, eugenol, ferulic acid, gallic
