the thrones of Scotland and England. The risings continued, and even intensified, after the
House of Hanover succeeded to the British Throne. They continued until the last Jacobite
Rebellion led by Charles Stuart was defeated, ending any realistic hope of a Stuart restoration.
*The Old Pretender/ the Chevalier St George The Two Pretenders were James Edward
Stuart, known as the Old Pretender, and his son Charles Edward Stuart, the Young Pretender.
Both were determined to take their place on the British throne. James Edward Stuart was a
devout Catholic, and his unwillingness to compromise on religion turned many potential allies
away from him. He attempted an invasion of Scotland with French fleet, but failed. He was
never recognized as a king of Great Britain.
